What Does A TiVo Geek Do With Two TiVos?

You might think the answer to this question is easy. Any normal TiVo geek would setup their two TiVos to use MRV and enjoy the fact that they have two TiVos. This is in fact not what I plan on doing! I’m only one referral away from getting a free TiVo! I’ve already decided what I’m going to do with my current TiVo once I get a new one. I plan on giving my current TiVo to my Mom :). Every time I go over to my parents I am disappointed by my parent’s lack of geekeyness (sp) and the fact that my Mom can’t watch what she wants when she wants to :). So, being the great son that I am I’ve decided to give my Mom my old TiVo once I get the new one…. What would you do with a second TiVo? Have you setup your parents with a TiVo?

Years ago TiVo had a contest where you could win one of the original model StandAlone 14 hour boxes by writing an essay describing why you loved TiVo. I based my essay on my experience of owning two TiVos (this was before MRV) and won a third one. I bought the lifetime service for it and set it up for my Mom.

Nice! I’m sure you Mom enjoyed it ;).

I had a newbie question…the FAQ on the tivo community web site is a dead link. What exactly is MRV? I assume some sort of networking, just curious on what it can do.

    Thanks in advance

Hmmm…your username sounds familiar :). MRV allows you to watch your TiVo programming from another TiVo in your house.

Check this out for more information…

I’m also less than a referral away from getting a free TiVo. We already have a 40 hour and an 80 hour. When we get the new one, the 40 hour will go live with my Mother-In-Law.

Alex, I’ve only had the TiVo for one night and I am already happy. Last night I was tired and saw that “THE GODFATHER” was going to be on, so I TiVoed it! Thanks, now all I have to do is explain it to Dad and we’re good to go. Love Mom

I searched for mrv, knowing what it was and how it worked but not knowing what the initials were, and I found your blog. I am also a mom (almost 59, 6 kids 13-33, 2 grandkids, and a retired scientist - great to be a stay at home mom at last). So I do not know what the initials mrv stand for. Can you please tell me?

Sony burning software was miserable, so I ignored it after the 15 day trial and bught a Humax DVD recorder plus the second lifetime. I gave the first Ser 2 to Dad. He is 87 and has no clue what he is doing, but he manages. Then I missed the capability of transferring to my computer and bought a 3rd because I was tired of kid’s stuff taking over my tivo. My 13 year old and my husband get to use that one. The Humax DVD recorder (after I relaced it with free shipping because the recorder broke right away) works so much better than the transfers to the computer and Sony!

  10. TiVoBlog.com » Blog Archive » TiVo Tip: Navigate Through Your TiVo With Ease says:

[...] Nobody can argue that TiVo has a wonderful user interface. TiVo’s GUI (graphical user interface) is one of the reasons why the product has been so successful. After all how many high tech gadgets can put in front of your parents or grandparents and watch them use that device successfully? That being said, TiVo has taken the extra step to provide a number of shortcuts to some of the most common features. These shortcuts allow the user to navigate through the system via one or two commands. To access these shortcuts, head on over to the TiVo Central screen (press the “TiVo” located at the top of your remote) and press any of the following buttons to jump to their respective functions: [...]

[...] 140 hr. Series 2 TiVo: This is the TiVo that I received from the referral program. Initally I had a 60 hr. TiVo however, I’ve since given that one to my mother. [...]

  12. TiVoBlog | Unofficial TiVo News, Information and Commentary » Blog Archive » How About A Lightweight Series 3 TiVo? says:

[...] With that being said, should TiVo consider making a lightweight version of the Series 3 TiVo for those users who don’t need all of these features? Let’s face it; my Mother doesn’t care about built-in Ethernet or CableCARD 1.0 & 2.0 support. All my Mom would like to be able to do is record two shows at once. Also, with all these wonderful capabilities, what do you think the price tag is going to be? Some people including myself have estimated that the price will be $500 or upwards! Do you really think that my Mom who simply has a Series 2 TiVo that I gave her will be willing to pay $500+ for a Series 3 TiVo that has more functionality then she needs? [...]
