Is The Series 3 TiVo Worth $800?
Now that we know the price of the Series 3 TiVo, I thought I would put together the following poll. Let me know what you think.

This is a good read if you own TiVo stock or if you are thinking about purchasing some….
Tomorrow my Wife, Mother, Father, Son and I are driving eight hours to reach our vacation destination. Being the big geek that I am, I decided to transfer and burn several episodes of Sesame Street and Clifford the Big Red Dog so that my 18 month old son can enjoy some of his shows while he is stuck in the car. TiVoToGo really is great for travel isn’t it?
Is it just me or does it seem like TiVo HME development has come to a grinding halt?. Remember back in June ‘05 how TiVo sponsered a developer challenge? Well, ever since then it seems like HME development has slowed down considerably. Even the developer of Galleon? has said that he is discouraged with the lack of support and updates TiVo is providing. What’s going on with HME? TiVo hasn’t released an update to the API since 10/31/2005!
I personally would like to see new HME apps. In my opinion, it’s one of the best features that TiVo has to offer.
Is anybody willing to offer up some prizes for a competition? How about a new car or a 50 inch plasma :)? No seriously, is anybody interested in sponsoring a developer challenge to get TiVo HME application development started back up?
Here’s one more reason why we need a Series 3 HD TiVo. Wouldn’t it be great to record football in High Def?
Even since I purchased my HDTV, my TV watching diet has consisted of mostly high definition content. The colors and clarity of high def has me addicted. In fact, I’m so addicted to HD that I now feel cheated when I’m “forced” to watch a show in standard def. Shouldn’t all TV programming be in HD :).
Since the Series3 HD DVR isn’t out yet, I’m forced to watch all of my HD shows live. No more time shifting or pausing shows really sucks however, I’m willing to watch commercials for HD.
Are you the same with your HDTV? Have you found that the quality of HDTV outweighs the benefit of a TiVo?
After writing this past I’m back to thinking that I should buy a Series3 TiVo as soon as it is released. Or, maybe I should wait on the Series 3 TiVo and cheat on my TiVo instead…
Damn I’m confused…
The other day a buddy of mine asked me if I was going to buy a Series3 TiVo as soon as it is released. Initially I said yes however, now I’m starting to think that I might wait a little while before I throw down my hard earned cash.
Like most first generation technologies, I expect the Series3 TiVo to have some hardware and software issues. TiVo is normally pretty good about releasing a product that is relatively bug free however, the Series3 TiVo is a big jump in technology and there are bound to be problems (IMHO).
This may all change of course once the box is released and I read some of the reviews. Also, if the DVR comes in at a decent price then I may decide that it is worth the risk. Don’t forget that I just purchased a $2,200 TV so my technology budget has been reduced somewhat :).
I know that I’ve been pestering TiVo about releasing this device however, I want to make sure that when I buy the device is solid and that I don’t have to worry about any issues.
Does anybody know if the first generation Series1 and Series2 TiVos had issues when they were first released? I’ve only had my TiVo for two years now so I don’t have any experience with a first generation device. When I purchased my TiVo, the Series2 TiVo had been out for quite some time.
Are you planning on getting a Series3 TiVo as soon as it is released or are you going to wait?
I just purchased a 42” Panasonic plasma. In just one short week, I am already addicted to HD. I don’t have many HD channels however, the ones that I do have are a pleasure to watch. I find myself watching shows that I never would have watched, simply because it is in HD.
The only problem with this scenario is that the Series 2 TiVo doesn’t allow me to record HD. If I want to record HD content and I don’t want to go with satellite, I really only have one option. This option would require me to cheat on my TiVo and pickup Adelphia’s DVR so that I could record HD. I bet you never thought you would hear me say it but I may need to cheat on my TiVo and pickup an Adelphia DVR just for HD content. I’d hate to do it but if the Series 3 TiVo doesn’t come out soon I might be forced to do it.
Come on TiVo; provide us with an update on the Series 3 TiVo. How much is it going to cost? What will the service plan be like? When is it going to be released? Any type of news might help me to hold off on getting one of those crappy Adelpia boxes. I’m probably one of your biggest fans but I just can’t keep sitting around waiting. I’d hate to do it but I may just have to commit adultery and pick up an Adelphia HD DVR :(.
Is the dual-tuner TiVo too little too late? Ed Bott seems to think so in his posted titled: “Who does TiVo think will buy its dual-tuner boxes?“.
Ed has pinpointed some serious limitations in the dual-tuner TiVo namely that it doesn’t easily allow for dual tuner digital cable recording and that it doesn’t support over the air (ota) recording. In my opinion, the dual-tuner TiVo is more of a entry level dual-tuner box which is meant for people who simply want to record analog cable. As I said before, the dual-tuner TiVo is a great solution for somebody like my Mom who doesn’t subscribe to digital cable and who doesn’t care about HDTV. Granted the dual-tuner TiVo isn’t cutting edge however, it does fill a gap in TiVo’s product. A similar media center pc would cost a lot more and for somebody who simply wants to record two analog channels at once the dual-tuner TiVo is a great solution.
I understand that Ed is a tech geek like me but, lets not forget that there are people out there who don’t want cutting edge technology. For this type of person the dual-tuner TiVo is a great solution. If you want more capabilities then the DT TiVo has to offer you might want to consider waiting on the Series3 TiVo. The Series3 TiVo is supposed to be a dream come true for anybody who is geek like me.
Here’s an interesting read for anybody who owns a TiVo and is a parent. The article talks about how DVRs and other technology have changed the way in which our children perceive the world. Interesting if you are into that kind of thing…
In Sam’s world, whatever he wants to watch is at his — or, rather, his parents’ — fingertips. We have TiVo, and we’ve amassed a sizable collection of his favorite shows. He never has to wait for The Wiggles to come on; he asks and he receives. I feel bad when we can’t show him something because we didn’t think to record it the first time we watched it.
