Video Of The Day: Upgrading Your TiVo Using WinMFS

Update 01/25:  I’ve gone ahead and removed the embedded video based on a couple of comments I read.  Head on over to TiVoCommunity or checkout my recent WinMFS post if you are interested in installing a new hard drive in your TiVo.

If you follow me on Twitter you probably already know that I recently upgraded the drive in my Series 3 TiVo using WinMFS.  As the following video shows, the process is normally quite easy however, in the case of my upgrade it didn’t go so smooth.  Thanks to the folks at TiVoCommunity.com, I was able to get the drive to work.

I plan on blogging my upgrade fiasco sometime in the near future (probably after CES).  In the meantime, take a look at this video and leave a comment if you’ve used WinMFS or if you’d like to upgrade your TiVo’s internal hard drive.

  • I thought this was a decent video other than the comment about the CableCARDs becoming extinct.

You jump into cloning the drives without telling us anything about connecting the drives to the pc. And by this time the 1 TB drive is apparently in the TiVo HD, so this jump can be confusing for this reason as well.

Also, Cable Cards are not needed? Really? News to me. I still need them.

Steps are there, but not in the right sequence. The posting referenced in the video does mention you’ll need WinMFS and the need to connect both drives to a computer before getting too far in the process.

I’m thinking of upgrading my Series 3, as I’m near capacity on the unit, even with a 500 GB external drive. This video seems to deal with a fresh, out-of-the-box TiVo. However, I feel things are a little more complicated with ones that are in use with external drives.

    Ugh.

What a lousy video. Not only are the steps not shown in the correct order, and not only is there various other misinformation in the video, but the dude is using a wrong HD model as his replacement.

If this was your guide, no wonder you had a fiasco in your upgrade.

If you follow the TivoCommunity instructions, the upgrade is quite simple and hassle-free.

  • Wifey got me a MyDVR Expander for Christmas and it is amazing. Easy setup and no issues thus far. I have read some people have trouble with it after 6 months or so. If that happens, I’ll get a big internal and install myself.

I’m sorry, there were good intentions and it’s nice looking, but this is a terrible instructional video for all of the reasons above and more IMO. Anyone watching the first part would think you could just pop in any old 1TB hard drive and be in business. Then there’s absolutely no set-up of the hardware or software before running winMFS. Everything is out of sequence. Need I go on?

Carefully following the instructions on the TCF’s “Drive Expansion and Drive Upgrade FAQ” (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=5616160#post5616160) are exact, correct and much clearer.

This is actually a fairly easy upgrade for anyone comfortable with connecting a hard drive to a computer (oh, did he leave that part out?). I’ve done it a number of times. But do everyone that’s even remotely interested in performing this upgrade a favor…remove the link to this video! It will only confuse and frustrate people.
