TiVo.com now offers an extended warranty option on both new and refurbished TiVo DVRs. This warranty option is offered as an extension to TiVo’s existing warranty that you automatically receive with all TiVo DVRs (90 day free labor/1 year parts exchange). Prices on the warranty are actually pretty good. For $29.99 you can get a 2 year warranty. A 3 year warranty will cost your $39.99. Additional details can be found here.
What do you think of this new warranty offering? Are you going to add an extended warranty package to your next TiVo DVR purchase?

If they had a five year warranty, I’d probably plop the cash down for the extra protection, but when you consider how reliable TiVo has been and that the cost to fix most of the problems tends to be only around $100, I don’t see myself taking advantage of this particular offer. May end up costing more in the long run, but it usually takes at least 5 years before you start seeing problems.

I would probably buy this if I were buying a new TiVo today. It seems a reasonable price. The trouble with the TiVo HD, however, is that there are so many “moving parts” compared to analog cable on the Series2 — CableCARD, Tuning Adapter, more complex codecs, signal strength issues, etc — that it’s hard to know who is at fault for a given problem.

I wonder if the warranty can be added to an existing TiVo that has not yet reached the end of its 1-year warranty period?
One thing TiVo really needs to figure out is how to transfer Season Passes, Wishlists, etc. from the “old” TiVo to the “new” TiVo when doing a warranty exchange — or simply an upgrade from one TiVo to another. How easy would it be to store ONLINE the season passes & wishlists from my network-connected TiVo HD? Tivo.com already shows me my Todo list and Now Playing list. Just grab a copy of my Season Passes and Wishlists in case my TiVo fails, so I can restore them when I buy a new TiVo. And if you do that, let me enter Wishlists, etc. on the web, avoiding the need to “type” on the TiVo.
This feature has been requested by a lot of users. I suspect that TiVo is working on it since they recently rolled the online to do and now playing lists. It only seems logical that you will be able to manage your season passes from tivo’s website as well.
I’ll ask @tivodesign on Twitter about being able to purchase the warranty while your dvr is still within the one year warranty. Stay tuned…
From @tivodesign on Twitter: “@TiVoBlog An extended warranty can be added within 90 days of the original purchase of the TiVo DVR.”

Thanks Alex – I got my TiVo HD last Christmas, so I will have to take my chances once it leaves warranty next month.
