Hmmmm...Hulu is flash-based, Hulu plans to charge for content. Could a model be in the works that brings Hulu onto Tivo?

Ryan, the Media Center in Windows 7 and on the Xbox is a train wreck. It is fundamentally the same Windows Media centers in prior versions of Windows that has earn it a spot on just about every top 10 worst technologies list published over the last two years. Tivo's OS is not based on the newest, snappiest technology, but it still stands peerless in the design and functionality category.

Broadcom added native support for Flash Lite 3 in its newest DVR SoCs. These SoCs are are significantly faster than those found in the TivoHD and Series3. Press release:

http://www.broadcom.com/press/release.php?id=s357665&industry_id=4

http://www.adobe.com/products/flashlite/features/

The next-generation BCM7410 and BCM7420 SoCs (1500 DMIPS) will also support Flash Lite when they become available.

Within a a few years, embedded systems should have access to most, if not all, features currently supported by the desktop version of Flash.

I know one provider recently began work on a Flash-based UI to replace their current UI. I think it is very likely that others are doing the same. Good to hear that TiVo is joining the party.

There are loads of talented Flash developers seeking work, so R&D wise, it certainly sounds like a cost-effective way to build a new interface. I would not at all be surprised if Flash were to become 'the standard' for embedded UIs in the next 12-24 months.

This gets me thinking... Hulu is Flash-based. Perhaps a new partnership? Would be nice to get more on-demand programming.

Hopefully it's part of an entire UI refresh, like those leaked videos. Replacing the slow-a$$ Java-based HME apps is a no brainer (if the new stuff is speedier), but it's time to refresh it all - quicker, more lively not less (flat, like the Comcast TiVo GUI).

Yeah, definitely more than prototyping if they're talking embedded systems. Nice catch!

I'd like to see TiVo do something besides Flash. It's processor intensive and it just going to slow down the UI in my opinion.

They need to do something though....their UI is dated. Take a look at the Media Center in Windows 7 and compare that to TiVo and you'll see why I make the jump and ditched my TiVos last month.
