I just noticed that the Western Digital My DVR Expander drive is now available for only $99!
Check it out if you are interested in adding 500 GBs worth of additional recording space to your TiVo HD or Series 3.
Thanks to the readers of this site, I’m lucky enough to actually own an expander drive. Overall the device works really well however, if you don’t want yet another device inside your media closet you might want to purchase an internal drive from either DVRupgrade.com or WeaKnees.com. Both of these companies produce a great product and I would highly recommend either of them.
No matter how you add storage (internal or external), expanding your TiVo’s recording space is a great thing. Thanks to the amount of storage I have inside my TiVos, I hardly ever have to delete a recording in order to make space for another.

I had one of these. Sat in my closet unboxed for months, then I sent it off to ebay. I’d rather upgrade the internal drive. Less clutter, less energy consumption.
I tend to agree. Having an internal drive seems to work better. That being said, an internal drive will void your warranty….
Bought one. Gonna try it out and buy a second if I like it. Glad these aren’t $199 anymore.
I agree. $99 really isn’t that bad of a deal. Somebody told me on twitter that you can also get the same deal at BestBuy.

[...] Keep in mind however that installing this device DOES void your warranty (90 days labor/1 yr parts exchange). If this has you concerned, you might want to check out an “officially” supported extender drive. [...]
