Attaching A WeaKnees RAID 1 External Drive To My TiVo HD

Here’s a video showing how to install a WeaKnees RAID 1 external drive.  I plan on posting a complete review in the near future however, I thought I would get this video out since I’ve been using the drive for a couple of months now.  Thus far, I’ve been extremely impressed with the product.  As you can see from this video, installation was a breeze and the drive has been working great ever since.

Let me know if you have any questions about the device.  Like I said, I plan on posting a review sometime in the near future (hopefully before the end of the week)….

  • Do I understand correctly, that you’re essentially swapping the internal and external SATA connections and TiVo thinks the RAID is an internal drive? Is it 1TB storage total, or 1TB duplicated? Also, how’s the noise/volume? Do you have a Kill-a-watt? I wonder how much less energy the TiVo is using and what this device pulls. Hmmmmm. :)

    • You’ve got it right. Of course this DOES void your warranty. Unfortunately, I don’t own a kill-a-watt (although this might be a good reason to buy one).

    • Sorry…I forgot to answer a couple of your questions.

The noise isn’t bad. It does however have a fan so you do hear it if you get up close. My biggest complaint thus far is that the front lights blink all the time. I would prefer it if they would stay solid green when all is good.

I’m pretty sure that the unit I have contains two 500 GB drives (500 GB, RAID 1). I plan on opening up the device to see if it does in fact work when I unplug one of the drives. Stay tuned for more info…

  • Dave and Alex-

You’ve made us realize that we need to make a revision to the instructions. For energy savings, we should have customers fully disconnect the SATA cable from the internal drive. The way we have it, the internal drive will still spin up, which both uses power and wears down the drive (eventually). Our next instructions will tell the customer to disconnect that cable.

Overall, their will likely be a net increase in the amount of power consumed, still, since you’re running two drives instead of one.
