TiVo Desktop 2.7 Now Available For Download (Windows Only)

Update 02/05 @ 9:39PM:  Some TCO user’s have discovered that the update uses Apple’s Bonjour technology to discover TiVos on your network….

Dave Zatz just sent me an email letting me know that TiVo Destkop 2.7 is now available for download.   According to the release notes, this update includes a number of bug fixes as well as some new features.

Stay tuned for information about this release.  I don’t have time to install the update right now however, I plan on performing the upgrade sometime in the near future…

This version includes the following improvements to TiVo Desktop:

  • Earlier versions of TiVo Desktop are automatically removed during installation
  • Automatic transfers from the TiVo® DVR can now have ‘Keep at Most’ values similar to a Season Pass® on the TiVo DVR.
  • TiVo recordings on your PC can be grouped by series when viewed from your TiVo DVR.
  • TiVo Desktop treats files ending in “.vob” the same way as it treats MPEG-2 files.
  • When uninstalling, you can choose to completely remove TiVo Desktop. This option removes additional files and settings that allow playback of TiVo recordings without the full TiVo Desktop software, including the Media Access Key (MAK) and the TiVo Desktop Plus key.

This version has the following improvements in TiVo Desktop Plus:

  • Videos from Flip camcorders can be viewed on your DVR.
  • You can select a portable device conversion when defining an automatic transfer.
  • TiVo Desktop supports transferring some files in the MKV format to your DVR.
  • TiVo Desktop may recognize additional video types based on other software installed on your system.
  • TiVo recordings that were broadcast as movies will be added to the Movies category when added to iTunes

Problem after upgrading to TiVo Desktop 2.7 on my PC running Vista. When I try to open TiVo Desktop I get the message ” Transfer server wrong version! ” anyone know how to fix this please?

  • Marc

No. I also got problems where the little Vista circle would never stop so I could use the Tivo desktop 2.7 application. I have since moved back to 2.6.

I installed OK on Vista, but when converting to use files on my iPod, there seems to be an error every time. For example, when converting a half-hour show about 10 minutes in the picture freezes and stays that way for the next 20 minutes. I’m considering switching back to 2.6 if I can’t figure out how to resolve…

  • Kenneth

I already switched back to 2.6 nobody was able to help with 4.7.

Anyone know where the 2.6.x installer might still be downloaded from? It seems to have disappeared from the website…

      Hey E.

Send me an email at ‘allreddan2@hotmail.com’ and I’ll be glad to reply and attach the v2.6.2 installer for you if you still need it. I’m one of those guys who still keeps all of the previous versions even after newer ones become available.

      Lemme know….

I also tried 2.7 adn had to go back to 2.6.2. You’d think the Tivo folks would have tested this version a little more.

Here’s what seems to work to prevent the “transfer server wrong version” message. Completely remove the previous install, using the installer cleanup that Tivo provides. Then, temporarily turn off automatic antivirus protection–mine was through Norton. Now, reinstall Tivo Desktop, version 2.7. You can then turn the virus protection back on. The problem is the antivirus software prevents a piece of Tivo Desktop from updating the “server” to the right version.

    • Thanks for passing this along. I’ve yet to try TD 2.7 because I’ve seen that some people are having problems. Do you know if other AV packages (ie: avg) need to be disabled when installing 2.7?

ARE YOU KIDDING? This whole program is a joke. Out of the last 20 shows I recorded all 20 are listed as copy protected. Don’t waste your mone on this. TIVO has clearly decided that you are not allowed to keep copies of anything you record anymore.

Originally TiVo said that “You can select a portable device conversion when defining an automatic transfer” was part of 2.7…but I don’t see it in the product and now the What’s New for 2.7 Desktop Plus does not list it. Anyone know if this was a mistake? Is it coming at a future release?
