DVR Remote: Yet Another iPhone TiVo Remote

Update 02/06 @ 6:01 AM: An update (version 1.1) is now available which is supposed to fix the Now Playing list bug. For some reason I can’t get this feature to work with any of my DVRs (Series 3  & TiVo HD).  Let me know if you have this update and whether or not you are able to pull the Now Playing list from your DVR.

Update 1/23 @ 7:24 AM: The developer of DVR Remote (Derek Stutsman) contacted me to let me know that the YouTube text entry feature does in fact work (even though it may not be that intuitive).  Also,  Derek has said that a fix is on the way for the Now Playing list issue.  Stay tuned for more info.  I’ll let you know as soon as we get a new release.

Thanks for contacting me Derek.  I really do appreciate it.

Hello, thanks for the review of DVRRemote!  I wanted to make one small correction; the text entry feature does work with YouTube but you have to swipe to select the red YouTube keyboard.  The NP timeout fix is in approval now.

Thanks!

Gizmodo has once again alerted me to yet another iPhone app called: DVR Remote (iTunes link).  Like T Remote (formally TiVoRemote), this app turns your iPhone/iPod touch into a full fledged TiVo Remote. On the surface this app appears to be a lot better than the competition.  For starters, DVR Remote has a much more polished interface. The app really does resemble a Series 3 remote.  In addition to the fit and finish, DVR Remote also includes a “Now Playing” list feature which is intended to allow you to view what your TiVo has recorded (checkout DVR Shows if you are only interested in this feature).

That being said, I’m having two issues with this app which are preventing me from recommending that you spend $2.99 on it. Number one, the text entry mode does not work in the YouTube text entry screen.  T Remote also exhibited this bug however, a new version was recently released to address this issue.  Secondly, I have not been able to get the “Now Playing” list feature to work.  Whenever I try and connect to my TiVo it says that my Media Access Key may not be correct.

Until these issues are fixed, I cannot recommend that you purchase DVR Remote.  Hopefully we’ll see a new version sometime in the near future.  In the meantime, checkout T Remote or simply wait for DVR Remote to address these issues……
