I Just Received A SDV Tuning Adapter!

Update 01/14 @ 8:32PM:  This is great!  I now have the SDV adapter up and running.  Thanks to the adapter, I can now tune ~10 more HD channels!  In case you can’t tell, I’m extremely excited.  I’ve been waiting for this adapter for a long time so, I’m glad to see it finally come to fruition.  Let me know if you have any questions or if you want me to post any more info.  Right now I’m gonna go and watch SU vs. Georgetown in HD :) …..

In case you don’t follow me on Twitter, I thought I’d post a quick note hear letting everybody know that I just received a SDV tuning adapter from Time Warner.  I haven’t had a chance to install it yet however, if all goes well I plan on setting it up later tonight.  Stay tuned….

It’s the exact one I have, lol…. It’s relatively easy to set up! Good luck :)

  • Congrats! I’m very jealous. Where are you located at? I just called the local Time Warner office here in the Raleigh Durham, NC area, and they’ve still no clue when the SDV adapter will be available in our area. Grrrrrr!

  • It looks like other people in my general area also received an adapter. Here’s some more pics…

Hooray! I got mine today as well. Another upstate New Yorker. I have been looking forward to this since March!!

No news in San Diego yet. Anyone know how the SD Adapter will work with My DVR Expander. I couldn’t get by without the extra capacity on my S3.

Why in the world does the thing have to be so big? Part of the appeal of TiVo HD is to get rid of the ugly power-sucking digital cable box, and now we have to essentially replace it with an equally ugly and equally large SDV Tuning Adapter box. I thought it was supposed to be a ‘dongle’, implying something small, like the Linksys USB-Ethernet adapter for the Series2. Argh.

Like John, still waiting for this thing in San Diego.

So, does tuning into and between SDV channels take longer? I would imagine there would be more lag when surfing channels as it has to talk back and forth to the head end.

Were you able to just go to a local time warner office and pick it up? or did you have to requestion through their online interface?

    • Awhile back I entered my info on TWC’s website. To my surprise, it just arrived without TWC even contacting me. I spoke with one of their engineers and he said that there are only 20 units deployed in my area. Apparently they are only testing it right now.

I received my tuning adapter very easy to hook up no problem. I have it working with my original series3 ..

  • I just receieved my TA yesterday and installed it today. I too wasn’t given any heads up that it was coming or anything. Very happy to get my HD channels back though! I’m also I’m the Syracuse area.

Does anybody report any problems with their Cisco Tuner? I received one from Cox in Fairfax, Virginia.

(By the way, there was almost no notice or information from Cox about availability…I had to pursue it repeatedly on my own, when they finally told me the had units available in their Herndon Office…of course the activation line didn’t work so I had to schedule a tech to come out who complained that almost know one knew how to work with the myet.)

When the unit is working, it works well, meaning it delivers those SDV channels I was previously unable to get.

However, now, about 1 to 3 times an hour, it seesm like my Tivo Unit becomes disassociated from the Tuner, and then immediately recognizes it. This did not happen right away. For the first two days, I had almost none of these drops, then it increased in frequency.

This presents a problem when recording channels, as when the drop-out occurs, and the resumes, any TV shows that were being recorded do not resume the recording

So we are having lots of shows that are only getting partially recorded…which sort of defeats the purpose of a Tivo.

Furthermore, when you are watching a recorded show and the drop occurs, you get taken to a a Tivo message telling you so, and out of your show. You then have to go back in and FF to where you left off.

If this was even happend just once per day, it is something you could probably live with, but 1 to 3 times per hour is probably going to require another tech visit, which is a pain.

    Thanks for any feedback!

Mike! What you’re describing (“my Tivo Unit becomes disassociated from the Tuner, and then immediately recognizes it”) is exactly what I’ve been going through. It is horrible. I just decided to search the web to see if it’s happening to anyone else, and found you. It looks like no one else replied saying they had this problem???

We picked up our Cisco tuning adapter a few days ago here in Kansas City for use with our Tivo HD and Time Warner service.

While we do get maybe a dozen more HD channels, there are more than two dozen that we are still unable to view. Sadly there more channels that I’m interested in that we do NOT get than channels that we do.

I was to understand that the tuning adapter would allow us to watch all of the SDV channels? This is pretty disappointing after such a long wait.

    • Are you sure that the channels you are trying to tune are VOD channels? Video on demand won’t work with a SDV adapter.

I’m also in the KC Market. And got my Tuning Adapter last week. After you install it you need to call TW and have them hit the TA to authorize all HD channels. Keep in mind that you won’t get On Demand HD. But I do receive all HD Channels with the TA and the cable cards.

  • I’m also in the CNY TWC market, Utica specifically. I’m a little concerned because I bought the Tivo HD and had a cable card installed yesterday (they were only able to get one working and are coming back today for the second). Anyways, I was only able to receive my local HD’s along with YES, ESPN and TNT HD. Will the Tuning Adapter pick up all the remaining HD stations? I didn’t think all of those channels were being carried via SDV. If I can’t get the remaining HD channels my TiVo experience may be short lived…I hope that’s not the case as I really like the box so far.

Anyone know about the CNY market specifically? It be nice to know what I can expect.

    • Jeremy,
I received your help request and I’m working on a response now. Check back later tonight or early tomorrow for a response.

      • Thanks for your reply. Got my TA yesterday and it works great. I was surprised to see the amount of content being carried via SDV. Anyways, I lucked out with my cable cards as well. During the first install attempt, the tech brought 2 S-Cards…unfortunately, only one worked. The next day a supervisor came out and installed a single M-Card and all was well. The guy said that in the CNY area M-Cards are still pretty hard to get a hold of so I feel pretty fortunate. Thanks again!

        • Glad to hear you have it working. Do you know if they’re giving TAs to anybody who asks? A friend of mine is thinking about getting a TiVo HD however, I wasn’t sure if TWC was giving them out to everybody.

          • As long as you have a Cable Card then they will mail it out to you. They actually called me last week to verify I was having CC installed on Monday, they said that they can’t send them until your install is complete. I received my TA on Wednesday, so they were pretty good about getting it right out.

  • [...] this TCO thread, it appears as though Cablevision is going to rollout SDV adapters just like TWC  did in my area. Hopefully this means you’ll hear something in the near future. Have you tried to call [...]

  • I’ve been losing channels here in Milwaukee. Started twittering about it on Valentine’s Day since the TWC support had no clue what was going on. (@johnmichl) Interesting to note that @Tivo picked up my first tweet and responded in less than two hours offering to help. I even had the Tivo service manager call me the next day! Nothing from TWC for about two weeks but suddenly they started following me and then I was contacted by the VP of PR for TWC in NY. Today, he said I should have an adapter by the end of March. Great timing. The channel I don’t get is Time Warner Sports which carries alot of lot of the NCAA basketball I want to be watching!!! ARGH.
