In case anybody cares, here’s a network diagram showing how my TiVos are connected to my home network. It has been a long time (2007, 2006) since I updated this diagram so, I thought it was about time for me to refresh it.
As you can see, both my TiVo HD and my Series3 are connected to my network using a hard wired connection. I currently store all of my videos and music on a 500 GB Seagate drive. I use pyTiVo and TiVo Desktop (Desktop Plus on Windows) to serve this content to both of my DVRs. For TiVoToGo, I mainly use iTiVo on my Mac however, I also use TiVoDesktop whenever I use my Windows box.
Is your setup a lot like mine? What software do you run on your PC/Mac?
- My Network Diagram

From the looks of your diagram, do you have anything feeding the HDTivo? Like cable? I see the antenna on the other Series 3 box.
I have the same antenna in the attic, but I think I need to adjust it a little.
I have cable (TWC) connected to both of my DVRs. If I get a chance, I’ll go back and update the diagram….
I’ve got the exact same router as you. After a billion tech calls, I’ll never forget that model number. I’ve got my modem connected to my WRT54G which then feeds internet into my main computer, my voip phone, my printer and a really long ugly cable that snakes all the way to the living room. From there, I’ve got it plugged into a router that splits the connection to between my TiVo S3, my Xbox, my DivX Connected box and the laptop connected to the big screen TV.
Does the hard wire allow you to get data off the Series 3 any faster than over wireless? I’ve seen glacially slow exports to all comers over wireless, and I’m wondering if I shouldn’t just pull wired eth to the system.
I don’t have any offical numbers however, a hard wired connection is faster than wireless. Does anybody have any numbers to prove this?
I’m running Verizon DSL into my free to me NetGear WiFi(B) router at my TV. Hardwired to my TiVo, Wireless to a pair of laptops & a PS3 & Wii. I have a wire run to the bedroom with another TiVo.
Out of curiosity, why are you running both Tivo Desktop and pyTivo? I just switched to pyTivo and have no desire to touch the crash-often mess that is Tivo Desktop. (However, I also don’t particularly have a need to download video from my Tivo.)
That’s a very good question. I should uninstall TiVo Desktop on my Mac and simply use pyTiVo for this same functionality. To be honest, I’m not sure why I haven’t already done this
. On the Windows side, I like to use TiVo Desktop plus for transferring & transcoding my shows.
I got an almost identical setup:
Tivo HD (networked)
Mac G4 (running Galleon)
Macbook
Dell Optiplex (500Mhz); Ubuntu 8.0.4, running Galleon with Streambaby (stream videos from PC instead of just transfer)
Linksys WRT54Gv8 (running DD-WRT v24 RC-7)
I highly recommend StreamBaby – its new, so its got some bugs, but they are developing it rapidly. Nice to not have to transfer files to tivo first
StreamBaby
There is a beta of pyTivoX with streambaby built in if you want to try that instead (for Mac):

Question, I have 2 tivos and want to connect them to each other and to tivo service.
I have one tivo that is wired to a netgear wgr614 v6, another new one that I would connect via wire to a linksys 54gs (dd-wrt) wireless router that will connect wireless back to the netgear router. Does any one have the setup to allow this to happen and will i be able to share program between the 2 tivos?
[...] Response: It sounds like your setup should work just fine. In fact, your setup is similar to mine (other than the router –> router wireless connection). Are you having a problem or, are [...]
