I just finished installing pyTiVo on my Windows XP virtual machine (using VMware Fusion). For those of you who don’t know, here’s a brief description of pyTiVo taken from the software’s official website:
pyTivo is both an HMO and GoBack server. Similar to TiVo Desktop pyTivo loads many standard video compression codecs and outputs mpeg2 video to the TiVo. However, pyTivo is able to load MANY more file types than TiVo Desktop.
For the longest time I’ve been wanting to install pyTiVo however, up until today I haven’t been able to find the time to do it. Over the next couple of days I’ll put together a mini-review complete with instructions on how to install pyTiVo on under both OS X and Windows XP. As of right now I’m really with happy with what pyTiVo has to offer. Within a couple of minutes I had it up and running on my Windows XP virutal machine. Stay tuned for a complete review….

I’ve been using pyTivo for more than a year (on Suse Linux) and I love it. In my case I have a DirecTV Tivo unit so the photo and music plugins are the only parts that work (due to my unit’s lack of HME support). It’s been mostly without any problems, but the authors are very responsive if you do have one.
I have been using pyTivo ever since they fixed the folder issue. I transfer all my shows from my TiVo’s (3) to a dedicated PC so I have all my shows in one cntral place to watch in any room.
Yes, OS X installation instructions (Leopard) would be MUCH appreciated!

Dale,
I published instructions here:

i hope this helps…
“Over the next couple of days I’ll put together a mini-review complete with instructions on how to install pyTiVo” PLEASE!!! It’s been more than a few days….I really need to know how to do this in XP.
Mike,
I’ll try and work on this tonight. The Windows version is a heck of a lot easier than installing it on the Mac. Basically all you do is download the setup file along with python and you should be good.
The instructions on how to install pyTivo on a Mac were Excellent, Thank You!!!

Since this was never updated, I thought I’d note my very successful very easy experience today:
1. Go to http://pytivo.armooo.net/wiki/WindowsInstall
2. As mentioned on that page, install Python. Anything 2.x, not 3.x. http://www.python.org/download/
3. Install the pyTivo Windows Installer.
http://pytivo.armooo.net/wiki/CurrentRelease
Click on Windows Installer, and then download either Zip.
That’s it. Follow the instructions. It’ll let you choose a folder to put all your videos in. Once you’re done, walk over to your Tivo and you’ll find your computer on there. Just tried it for a recently-bittorrented video, and it worked flawlessly.
So really, the only other thing you need to install (besides the pyTivo installer) is Python. Ignore anything about FFMPEG. That’s been compiled and included in the Windows install.
Thanks for posting this. I did complete a Windows install however, I never got the chance to write up a post.
The only thing I would add is that it gets kind of tricky if your videos are stored on another computer. In this case, you need to enter a username/password that has access to the shared drive on your network.
