It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a Galleon update however, just today John Kohl uploaded Galleon version 2.5.4. For those of you who don’t know, Galleon is one of the best TiVo Home Media Extension (HME) applications out there. I only wish that we could get version 3.0 complete with new features and not just bug fixes. I guess beggers can’t be choosers (Thanks John!).
Here’s a list of changes:
Version 2.5.4:
———————-
* Fix ToGo looping bug on null recording date (1811137)
* Added user-selectable range for local radar image (100, 300, 600 miles) in Weather
* auto-subdirectory publishing for GoBack, avoids the need to do it yourself
and also avoids bugs in TiVo folder navigation in older TiVo service
releases (Series 3 and HD should be OK without this).
(Probably needs some work to handle DOS shortcuts; should be OK on
UNIX and OS X.)* XML parsing of recording meta-data for non-Galleon-created video files
in GoBack areas. e.g. if you post-process .TiVo files into .mpg, just
put the XML output containing the show details, in the same format as
it comes from the TiVo, into a .xml file with the same prefix. If you
use tivodecode to unwrap .TiVo files, the metadata are in the
-02-0002.xml file generated with the -D (dump-metadata) option.* Enabled store-by-show handling in GoBack server (available on
GoBack preferences pane).
* Fix for linux Makefile (1815568) and init script for distro independenceKnown problems:
* not all galleon skins in HD cover the screen–use tivo skins
* still some layout glitches in HD
* still som

would this be a better solution than pyTivo? I love the fact that pytivo supports so many video formats, streaming movies from my WHS machine is much easier. But after looking at some of the features of Galleon, i’m wondering if this may be a nicer solution.
rich,
to be perfectly honest I haven’t had a chance to try pyTiVo. I keep meaning to try it however, I haven’t had the time. If I were you, I’d give Galleon a try. It really is easy to install and I’m sure it will only take you a couple of minutes before you know whether or not it will work for you.
I have been trying to install galleon on my whs and dont know how to. If anyone knows how could you please tell me.
How far have you gotten? Do you have java installed? Let me know and i might be able to help you.
I just figured out how to remote in to the whs and have not been able to install galleon. i get an error msg. saying ” windows cannot access the file. i do not have appropriate permissions”. i am logged in as admin., but no i have not installed java.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It’s been a long time since I installed Galleon. It looks like the installer will actually install Java if it needs it.

Alex, thanks for the reply. I’ll have to give Galleon a try soon. Good luck with your pyTivo install, if you like ripping movies and storing them on a local server and streaming to any tivo in the house pyTivo & Tivo handle it well. I ripped The Godfather Part 1 to H.264(.mp4) and the quality is definitley acceptable, although a full transfer to Tivo takes roughly 30 minutes for 8 Gigs. A small price to pay for watching movies from any Tivo in the house.
