TiVo And The “Social Web”
Louis Gray (louisgray.com) has posted a great article which points out a number of actions that TiVo should take inorder to improve its postion in the “social web” revolution (think digg, facebook, etc). I like a lot of these suggestions however, the fourth suggestion really peeked my interest. Wouldn’t it be great if TiVo made available a widget that would display what you’ve recorded on your TiVo? I know I would love to use a similar widget on this blog.
Granted, you can probably around do something like this with the following XML hack however, it sure would be nice if TiVo made it so that a geek like me didn’t have to come up with my own solution.
What do you think about these suggestions?

Good point. Why doesn’t Shanan write a blog? I think TiVo is a goldmine for social networking. Think–send-a-friend recommendations, social netwrking through TiVo interface. Comcast’s DVR has a singles site for goodness sake!

A guy at Msft came up with a Vista Gadget to do that… the setup instructions are somewhat painful, tho, be sure to read the blog post carefully

Scott, I know about the vista gadget (http://tinyurl.com/3jak6a) however, I would like a “widget” that I could place on my blog.

IceTV (a TiVo sort-of competitor in Australia) has had a brilliant Mac OS X widget and Yahoo! Widget Engine Widget for PCs for quite some time. We also have an API we’re opening up so other people can take full advantage of all kinds of remote recording features, including showing all your friends what you’re recording.
More info on the widget here:

We’re also doing other social networking things, like a Digg-style most popular list with comments:

We have loads more in the pipeline too.
Good times ahead for people in Australia!

With all of the stuff that my kids record, I’m not sure if I want the world to know what was just recorded on my TiVos:) You would see a mix of Disney Channel and SciFi channel, with a NY Mets season pass popping up.
