TiVo Server Error (The Parameter Is Incorrect), My TiVo Recordings On A Mapped Drive

Recently I went ahead and moved my “My Documents” folder onto a mapped drive.  After doing this, I started to receive the following error which prevented my computer from starting TiVo Desktop: “The parameter is incorrect”. Luckily, a couple of threads on TiVo’s support forum helped me get rid of the error and also informed me that TiVo Desktop doesn’t allow you to move the “My TiVo Recordings” folder to a mapped drive.

Has anybody else ever stumbled upon this limitation with TiVo Desktop?  Honestly, it’s kind of disappointing that TiVo Desktop prevents you from doing this.  After all, the recordings that I’ve transferred to my computer are rather large and it would nice if I could off load them to my NAS drive….

I had the same problem - I ended up just moving it back where it was.

Tivo desktop now supports shortcuts. So, put a shortcut to the NAS folder in the Tivo Recordings folder. The tivo desktop will show a Now Playing with all of the shows from local and NAS storage in one list.

    jerry,
great idea I don’t know why u didn’t think of this. I’ll try it when I get home and I’ll update this post if it works.

I’ve had my TiVo recordings on a mapped drive for quite some time now. I don’t know if it’s your NAS or not - you might want to look into their support as well.

I have my TiVo folder out on a Windows server on a wired connection on my network and I’ve never had any problems short of the occassional network issues where the TiVo Desktop lost the connection to my M: drive. I can see having issues if you are using wireless, as the drive mappings don’t always connect right away at logon.

Another thing to try, is use a folder name without any spaces (such as M:\Media\TiVo\). It sounds silly, but some programs will balk at this sometime. I simply changed this via the TiVo interface - no reg hacking.

If what TiVo support says is true, then I guess I’ve been fooling TiVo Desktop into thinking that my M: drive is a hard drive…

    Good Luck!

You could also use Microsoft SynchToy to push content from your local drive to your networked drive. You’ll still need to periodically purge your local drive, but it will ensure everything you save gets pushed to the network drive.
