TiVo Tip: Program Your TiVo Glo Remote Via The “Learning” Feature

TiVo Glo RemoteHere’s a feature that I didn’t know was possible. According to a TiVo.com knowledgebase article, the TiVo Glo remote (Series 3 remote) is a “learning remote” which is capable of being programmed via another A/V remote. Essentially what this means is that you can program your glo remote by pointing it at another device’s remote and the glo remote will program itself. This is obviously a great feature if you are having a tough time getting your glo remote to control another A/V device.

Has anybody successfully used this feature? If yes, I’d love to hear how well it worked….

Wow, I work there and didn’t know this. I can’t for the life of me, get my Glo Remote to control the inputs on my receiver, only the inputs on the TV (which I don’t care about). I’ve always programmed Glo Remotes with the IR codes.

  • I was hoping that this trick would work for me, but my home theater system isn’t cooperating. There is actually an IR code for my HTS, but when I hit up or down on the volume, it opens up the DVD player instead. After trying to teach my remote, I was able to successfully go through the learning process, but my HTS still tries to eject a DVD when I hit up or down on the remote, even though the remote I programed with it is fine. My HTS went on the fritz about a year ago, so I’m sure that it has something to do with this, but I’m surprised that its still getting the signal wrong, even after I’ve taught it to manually reproduce the up and down volume signals. If anyone has suggestions, I’m all ears, otherwise, I’ll just deal with multiple remotes until I upgrade to a better home theater set up.

I have the glo remote and it is the best remote I’ve ever had. The programming was cake and worked perfectly!! I highly recommend it and I wish that more remotes were this easy to program

I have one and it works wonderfully. I actually have a Series 2 and asked for one of these for christmas. Best $50 anyone ever spent on me :) .

  • Irwin,
I couldn’t agree with you more. The glo remote is a great remote!

Sadly I find this feature isn’t worth much. I tried programming my Stereo system vol up and down with this, and although the TiVo remote responded as if the programming worked, it would not control the Audio system.

Also annoying is that the selector switch on this remote (to select between two PVR’s) does not allow you to control different features. I tried programming one side to control the TV and the other to control the Audio system, but it was no joy. Once you program the Mute and Volume controls, it is the same for either setting of the DVR switch. Very disappointing.

The best controller is still a third party Universal Remote.

Unfortunately the feature doesn’t work for me either. But I think it is more due to model of my HDTV. I’ve done some research and the TV I have doesn’t offer any type of Universal Remote support. I’m not sure what that means, or how that’s possible. But Glo didn’t work for me.

FYI the article has moved to:

    Hi,
We just bought a Tivo (they have only just arrived in Australia!) When we go on the website, we can bring up the tv program, but we can’t find where/how to set it to record?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Rebecca.

I finally got a Glo (Specifically for the learning capabilities!) and I came across one problem. 5 of the buttons can be reprogrammed: TV Power, Vol Up, Vol Down, Mute, and TV Input. My new TV has two different buttons for turning the power on and turning the power off. (Annoying!) In order to support the two buttons, I made the Glo’s Power button correspond to the TV’s On button and the Glo’s Mute button correspond to the TV’s Off button. It works conceptually, but I’m not totally happy with it. It seems like an oversight that the Aspect button isn’t also programmable too, but I guess that’s reserved for Series 3/TiVo HD machines.

I just got the glo remote specifically for the learning mode. But I am having a terrible time. The instructions say to press select and tivo at the same time for 3 seconds and the red light will stay on to show it is in learningm mode. Well, the red light on my tivo does not come on when I press select and tivo. What is the deal? Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Marty
The red light on your Tivo does not light up. What they actually mean is the light/led at the top of your tivo REMOTE should stay lit up ;-)

That aside, I really want this remote for 1 thing that the original doesn’t do (Oh and the backlit stuff of course). TV Input; I have a pretty crap Acer LCD TV and all the functions were able to be learned by going into learning mode and using the channel up/channel down, but I tried for hours to get TV Input to work with no luck.

It seems crazy that I cannot program the power button to turn on/off my Tivo, Panasonic TV AND Sony receiver… I had to program the input button to turn the receiver on/off.
