Is it just me or does it seem like a lot of shows on your TiVo have the CCI flag set which prevents you from transferring these shows using TiVoToGo? Lately, it seems like more and more shows have this turned on. Am I the only one experiencing this problem and is there anything I can do about it?

Yes, it is really annoying the percentage of shows that are marked “Copy Protected”. I just want to transfer them to watch on my PSP for my commute but no joy. Oh well.
I haven’t noticed any for a few years, on Comcast cable in MI. I do remember running into quite a few that were flagged back when I received over the air broadcasts using an antenna. Also, I’m wondering if HD shows are more likely to be flagged, I can’t tell because I’m still living in SD…
The only copy protection I ever see if for TiVoCast stuff. I’ve never seen copy protection for shows I record off my satellite box. Like Bob, I’m also still 100% SD, so maybe it does indeed have something to do with HD vs. SD. But, then again, looking at your screen shot, the file size of the protected shows looks like what an SD show would be. Strange.
This might be a problem if I could use TTG to transfer files.
Are you currently able to transfer shows via TTG?
I lost the ability to successfully transfer shows on Saturday.
I have HD cable through Comcast in MI and can transfer most HD and SD programs using TiVo Desktop EXCEPT TiVoCast and anything recorded from premium cable channels such as HBO, Showtime, etc. Why in the heck is the Martha Stewart Show protected???
Why are the show protected? Because they can be. This was exactly the argument against the broadcast flag from the beginning. Which do you think it’s easier for the networks to do, sit around and debate which shows are really worthy of copy protection and which aren’t, or just say that all of them are and head out to an early lunch?
I have a Series 2 Tivo and a Series 3 HD Tivo. I’ve found that for Time Warner, almost everything that is broadcast digitally is copy protected on the Series 3. Stuff like NBC or CBS is okay because it starts out analog. On my Series 2 Tivo which records from a separate cable box and therefore gets everything by digitizing the analog signal, is never copy protected. That is why I will always be keeping the Series 2 and why I decided not to upgrade it to a High Def Tivo during the last promotional period in December. HBO on Series 3 Tivo – always copy protected. HBO on Series 2 Tivo – never copy protected.
I’m also on Time-Warner cable and have been (trying) to transfer my favorite programs to view on my Ipod Touch. The few programs that are not copy protected work great, but as I look on my screen I see only 22 out of 55 programs that are not copy protected. Of course it always seems the best ones are protected.
Its really disappointing and darned annoying. I’ve spend a lot of money every month to my cable company and I can’t even watch the content.

is if just me or does it seem like more and more shows are being copy protected?
Yes, since upgrading to the Series 3 over a week ago I have discovered that a lot of programs from Comcast (Denver, CO) are marked protected. Mostly HD and a few SD programs from premium content channels. I find it very annoying that I record a program in my living room and cannot watch it on my TiVo in my Bedroom. I think the MAK should trump the copy protection. Viewing within the same household should ALWAYS be allowed.
This is one of the many reasons people are moving to home-built machines. It’s cheaper to just turn your old desktop into a media player than to buy a Tivo HD and pay a subscription fee, then only be allowed to transfer 2-3 shows that you don’t really like anyway.
Couple that with the very slow browsing performance since the Fall update (on series 2 Tivos) and you’ve got a recipe for mass migration from tivo.
Maybe another company will pop up with tivo-like abilities before they fell into bed with broadcasters?
[...] If you find a show that you want to transfer, all you have to do is click on the “download link” and your web browser should initiate the download (assuming the show isn’t “Protected“). [...]
I have the same problem. Series 3, Mac, Time Warner service config. The only items I can transfer are ABC, CBS, NBC, HD channels. So I spent all that money for Toast for nothing! I also started playing around with purchasing videos from Amazon thru Tivo. They download without a problem.. but they too are protected. I currently running Mac OS 10.4.11. My buddy has a similar config but is using OS 10.5. I was thinking about upgrading the OS because I thought maybe that would help? I guess if I had a windows Tivo Desktop this wouldn’t be a problem…
I just returned the TiVo HD I got for Christmas because nearly every channel was broadcast with copy protection on Time Warner in New York City. Only channels that are required by law not to be broadcast with copy protection (broadcast networks) were broadcast without them. I returned the TiVo because the main reason I wanted it was to transfer show to my iPhone to watch on the way to work.
I pushed it as far as I could with Time Warner and they literally laughed in my face. They claimed it was the agreements that Time Warner had with the channels and that even if other providers weren’t sending the signal, they probably would start when it came time to renegotiate contracts.
This is a perfect example of how DRM only hurts legitimate consumers.
Are you guys sure you’re talking about copy protection?
The image posted by the first writer shows a “forbidden” red slash in the first column–but I don’t think that means the show is copy protected.
On my TivoHD, shows recorded in HiDef–regardless of whether I record them over the air or on cable–bear this symbol because they cannot be transferred to a SD (Lo-Def) TiVo. But I have no problem transferring them to my computer where they can then be further transferred………
