I really wanted to find a way to create the groups and have all my music videos go into one folder back when I wrote this article but I couldn't figure out any way to get it to do that. TiVo isn't publishing any information on that and I doubt they ever will. Someone might figure it out at some point though. Another issue I had was that the timeline of the clips I copied back to my TiVo always showed the time in seconds instead of minutes. I don't know why it did that but it didn't bother me too much.

To create and update the .properties file (Step Four), I find it's easier to open TiVo Transfer rather than using TiVo Desktop in System Preferences (TD). Opening TiVo Transfer creates the .properties file instantly, and more importantly, causes any saved changes in the .properties file to be recognized instantly.

TiVo Transfer is also good for finding the .properties file, by right-clicking on the show and selecting "Reveal in Finder", and for deleting a show and its .properties file. You could delete the files in Finder, but TD doesn't give up ownership until you stop TD, so you won't be able to empty your Trash without stopping and restarting TD. Using TiVo Transfer, the files completely disappear instantly, without any messy ownership issues. (Caveat: Deleted shows are not moved to Trash.)

I'm sure somebody out there will be able to crack the "group" trick.
I only found this on the Tivo Community Forum, maybe some experimentation will lead to the answer:

Try using this strings on the properties file:
isEpisodic
episodeNumber
sourceChannel
duration
programId
sourceStation
title
episodeTitle
description
seriesId
captureDate
startTime
duration
channel
format
resolution

Dada,
I wish I could take credit for this post but I can't :). In any case, I don't think there is a way to create a folder like you're talking about. Can anybody prove me wrong?

wow. That is a great post ! thanks!... is there a way to create folders in Tivo, so all of my Video Clips could be organized in a folder instead of just being listed on Now Playing menu??

Alex, you should make these How To posts static WordPress Pages to make them easy to find. Or at least setup a 'How To' page with links to the permalinks to this kind of post. You've had some very nice How To posts, but finding the old ones can be tricky, especially for new users.

@ MC - Let me just say that TiVo Decoder will make the file a somewhat standard MPEG2 file. From there do with it what you will. :) There are some good programs out there that let you transcode different video file formats. Visual Hub is a good one for the Mac.

Excellent work!

Related q: Does the Tivodecoder allow you to remove TIVO's restriction on video quality when transfering to AppleTV/Ipod's.

Thanks.
