A concerned Cox subscriber contacted me earlier today to find out if I knew anything about the Cox partnership which TiVo officially announced back in August ‘06. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that I haven’t heard anything about the partnership in a long time. In fact, the last time I remember reading something about the partnership was in April of this year. Come to think of it, TiVo didn’t even mention the partnership in their most recent financial results announcement. Has the partnership gone away or have I just missed some news?

I was under the impression that it was coming out 6 months after Comcast fully deploys. Comcast owns part of Cox and I know that they use some of the same back end systems, so that number could probably be shortened if we don’t see major problems when people start downloading the TiVo software. Ideally, it’d be nice if both systems launched at the same time, but it sounds like Comcast is pretty worried about breaking something with this download. Hopefully, they’ll hurry up and figure it out because people have been waiting for this a long time.

Comcast does NOT own any of Cox. Cox is a private company.
MegaZone’s article says some in 2008. I was just on the Cox website… and while I couldn’t find anything about TiVo on it, they did have a plug for a new TV-On-Demand service that’s coming soon.

The little screenshot on the side, is a million times slicker then the atrocious DVR interface they currently subject their customers to. Maybe this is part of their next-gen DVRs that TiVo is working on? (god I hope so)
Also, I’m pretty sure COX and Comcast have no relation.
I wrote and asked Cox about the deal with Tivo and was told the project has been put on hold and further information is not available at this time.
I spoke with a TiVo rep at CES 2008. While there was plenty to say about the developments with Comcast, he would only say that Cox is “in technical trials.”
I am a Cox digital cable subscriber using TiVo HD and recently noticed that we lost about 15 channels. I called Cox and they indicated that they are in the process of upgrading their system and are changing the way they communicate with their subscribers. They indicated that since TiVo does not support two way communications, that we will continue to lose channels as their system is upgraded. They indicated the only way to continue to get all the channels was to purchase a Cox DVR!

Sounds like they’re implementing Switched Digital Video (SDV) for some of their channels. The TiVo can’t tune SDV channels today, but later this year a device called a Tuning Resolver will be released that will make the TiVo compatible with SDV channels.
