engadgetHD.com: TiVoToGo & MRV HD Review (How Fast Are Your TiVoToGo Transfers?)

Ben Drawbaugh has posted a wonderful review of TiVoToGo and MRV (multi-room viewing) on the Series 3. Overall, the review is rather positive however, Ben did say that his transfer speeds are rather slow.

Granted, the transfers were pretty slow — in fact, they were about twice real time — and our understanding is that the hardware is the bottleneck, so upgrading to a gigabit network probably won’t help.

My transfer speeds aren’t as slow as what Ben is experiencing. For example, a 30 minute HD shows takes around 43-45 minutes to transfer. I don’t know why there is a difference between what I’m experiencing and what Ben is. At first I thought it was because both of my TiVos are wired but than I noticed that Ben’s TiVos are wired as well. Whatever the case may be, I’m happy that my transfers are faster :) .

How fast are your transfer speeds? Are they more in line with what I’m reporting or are your recordings transferring at a speed similar to what Ben is reporting?

  • My MRV speeds are horrible and take several hours. I have two wireless bridges (one at each TiVo) and a suspect cheapie router. I may need to “borrow” a SlingLink or two from work and see if that helps.

  • My transfers are in line with Ben. It takes forever. I love my Tivo and everything about it. This was the feature that sold me on the tivo and I am just not very happy about it.

What’s your setup look like? Are your TiVos wired or are they wireless?

I’d be interested to see what kind of speeds you get if you were to run an ethernet cable to you TiVos. That’s how mine is setup and I haven’t had any issues.

I have a wired 100 mb connection and it takes about 20 minutes to transfer 1 hour of SD video. That calculates out to about 10 mbps, which is horrible.

I use a wireless connection and my transfers take as long as the program length in minutes. I’m thinking of digging up an old computer to dedicate to TIVO transfers so I don’t tie up my personal computer for so long. I record everything at medium quality.

i had two series two DT tivos and was getting about 3 to 5 meg transefers form tivo to tivo/computer then i upgrated to the series 3 HD DT tivo and now i only get about 1 to 1.3 meg and that is all i changed even the series 2 is slower now i have both connected wired on a dir-655 with giga-ports i am not sure if it is the hardware or some firmware version that tivo has pushed out i just know that ever since i installed the series 3 my speeds have been slower from one tivo to another or to the computer but all of my other speeds are not affected like when i transfer to my other desktop i am still geting 10 to 12 meg trnasfers
