Just today, TiVo announced that they are offering some promotional prices for the Holiday season. From now until Feb. 3rd, you can get the TiVo service for as low as $8.31/month (if you prepay for 3 years). Along with the discounted service fee, TiVo also announced that existing customers can purchase a an additional TiVo and get a lifetime service subcription for $399 (offer good until Feb. 13th). If you interesting in seeing a summary of what has changed, you might want to head on over to TiVoLovers.
I don’t think I am going to take advantage of the $399 lifetime subscription offer mainly because I’m still concerned about the SDV issue. What do you think? Are you planning on taking advantage of this offer?

I don’t see $399 for lifetime as a good deal. To break even, your box will have to survive for 4 years, a pretty long time. The only potential upshot is resale value of a lifetimed-box. But how much will a 4-year-old box really be worth anyway?
If it were $299, then maybe. But $399, no thanks.
What I don’t like about the current pricing models is that it’s unclear for many what happens after your contract or prepay period ends. With mobile phones, you just keep paying your same old rate forever, and people like that. With TiVo, after your contract ends, they can raise your rate.
Would be better to say: commit to 1 year and you get $12.95 forever; commit to 2 years and you get $11.95 forever; commit to 3 years and you get $9.95 forever. After your contract ends, you can keep your old price, or jump into a new contract at the then-current rate.

[...] like music to my ears. The SDV issue has had me concerned for some time now. Maybe the most recent lifetime subscription offer isn’t such a bad deal after all

I am thinking about taking advantage of it, but I am new to TiVo and not sure if it is really worth it…
