TiVo HD Vs. Series 3 TiVo
Ben Drawbaugh has posted a wonderful article in which he compares the Series 3 TiVo to the TiVo HD. You are definitely going to want to check out this post if you are thinking about getting either a Series 3 or a TiVo HD.
In my opinion, the TiVo HD is a better deal now that TiVo has enabled the eSATA port on both the Series 3($358.59
, after mail-in rebate) and the TiVo HD
($234.68
). In the end, it all comes down to whether or not you want THX certification, a little more built-in storage, a better remote and a nifty OLED front display.

As a side note, I would like to thank Charles for putting me down as his TiVo rewards referrer. If you’d like to put me down as your referrer, all you need to do is enter my email address (raianoat AT gmail DOT com) when you activate your TiVo. Thanks Charles. It really is appreciated!

Excellent article - great “hands on” for me since I’m not motivated enough yet to flip it upside down and take it apart in the isles at Best Buy - much appreciated. I was sold on the TiVo HD but now I’m ready for Series 3. I’ve got 2 unconnected Tivo Series 2 boxes right now rotting away while I try to see where my cable company motorola box is going to go in the next couple months. According to rep on phone with Cox Cable - TiVo software is slated to start showing up in January 2008. Rep also reported that some customers are already able to pick up HD signal on their TiVo box - I doubt that one but the prospect of January 2008 in the midwest is cool. Great article - thanks for posting.
Oh yeah - sidebar - more than you wanted to know about me i’m sure but had to share - i broke the remote back cover plate on my series 2 - sliding it on and off too much impatiently waiting for something I’m sure. My wife ordered me a new one few months ago - it was the wrong one - it was grey and it should have been black - I called TiVo to see if they’d let me get that corrected in case I sell the box - they said - no problem sir - let me just send you a Glow remote no charge for the shipping or anything - I of course was a little shocked by that - so long story short. I’ve got 2 inactivated Series 2 boxes 40hour single tuner and 80 hour dual tuner and and extra glow remote just “SITTING” in a closet - while I play mickey mouse games with the COX motorola HD/DVR. Don’t ask what I was thinking - I should have never cancelled my Tivo service - I have a renewed love for Tivo - You don’t know what you got till it’s gone - and I think i’ll be adding a Series 3 very soon.

[...] 3 TiVo ($368.03 after $200 rebate) OR TiVo HD ($254.49): The Series 3 has a couple of features that set it apart from the TiVo HD. Purchase the Series 3 if you care about these added features. Otherwise, go ahead and pickup a [...]

Let me ask a basic question. Why is a phone line required for a TiVo box when my current Charter DVR does not require one? If I add my own TiVo box am I going to have to subscribe to some kind of additional service, and will it need to connect via phone line?

The TiVo needs to download its schedule data & program updates. You can use either an Ethernet connection (broadband) or a phone line.

The basic answer, LaughaC, is: Yes, there is a service fee to use TiVo in addition to the cost of the tivo “box” itself. While you can use a broadband connection to connect to the web, it will require a connection to a home network (wired or wireless). I’m guessing your Charter DVR connects directly to cable, although I could be wrong.
