Testing TiVoToGo Against My Series 3 TiVo

Like a kid on Christmas, I was extremely excited yesterday when I was able to successfully transfer a high definition show from my Series 3 TiVo using the 9.2 service update. To my surprise, TiVoDesktop only took ~48 minutes to transfer a 55 minute 6GB HD program! How is possible? Why is the Series 3 better at transferring programs than my Series 2 TiVo? My Series 2 normally takes around 60 minutes to transfer a 60 minute standard definition program so how is my Series 3 able to transfer a HD program in the same amount if not less time? Does the S3 have some hardware built in which allows it to perform better when it comes to TiVoToGo or is there less conversion necessary with the HD content? Can somebody educate me?

Whatever the reason is, I’m extremely happy with being able to transfer shows off of my Series 3. I am however, having some issues with getting Roxio Popcorn to work on my Mac. Has anybody successfully transferred a show from their TiVo HD or Series 3 using Roxio’s Popcorn or Roxio Toast for that matter?

I had a weird experience with Toast last night… I couldn’t get Toast to recognize my S3, so I tried TivoDecode Manager. As soon as TDM started up, my S3 rebooted. When it came back, Toast could now see the S3 and I was able to pull a show from it successfully.. In addition, I was also able to successfullly used TDM to pull a show too.

I don’t really know what to make of this…

I had a similar experience. I used TivoDecode Manager to try and pull an HD show. The tranfer started and then the Tivo freaked out. I pulled the plug on it and as it restarted it became clear it was applying the 9.2 update. When it was back up I was able to use TDM to get shows, no problem. I don’t own Toast or Popcorn, so I can’t vouch for them.

Also, I am seeing faster download speeds as well. What a nice surprise!

I haven’t been able to get TDM to connect to the series 3 yet (got the 9.2 update 6 days ago). I tried rebooting just now, but no luck. One thing I did notice was that under “system settings –> Media Access Key” it says that the media access key is not yet available.

For those that have this working, does it also say that the MAK is not yet available?

I was able to Popcorn 3 to transfer from my S3, but its video player plays the file at double speed. :-(

I was able to get TDM to recognize my TiVo HD and transfer a program to my PC but I could not transfer anything back from my PC to my TiVo HD. Anyone know how to get my TiVo HD to recognize my PC and get that same PC icon at the bottom of my Now Playing list that I have on my Series 2?

Update: I checked again this evening and it works now. So I went into the Tivo’s system settings and looked under Media Access Key and sure enough, it shows my access key now instead of saying it wasn’t available.

So, if you’re having a similar issue, before checking network connections, your computer, etc… take a look at that Tivo menu and see if it displays your Media Access Key yet.

I would assume that the better transfer speeds have much to do with the fact that the S3 and HD have USB 2.0 while the S2 units (at least mine) had USB 1.1 - that’s my best guess…..

My S3 & S2DT both are using a wired connection not the usb –> wireless adapter option. So, I don’t see how the usb speed could help.

Maybe the S3 has a 100BT ethernet network as opposed to the S2 10BT
    –Just a thought…
