CNET: Rhapsody On TiVo Review

CNET has published a review of the Rhapsody on TiVo HME application which TiVo recently launched. Overall the review is rather positive and it definitely has me interested in trying Rhapsody on TiVo once my S2 & S3 receive the update.

Despite all these gripes, Rhapsody on TiVo shows a lot lot of promise. When it was working smoothly, it was great to extend the Rhapsody experience to my living room and the service certainly has the TiVo “touch.” While Apple TV is great for bringing your purchased iTunes music collection to your home theater, Rhapsody on TiVo effectively brings millions of songs to your home theater. I’m definitely not ready to give it my full recommendation–it’s much too glitchy in its current state–but if TiVo and Rhapsody can smooth the kinks out, they might have a killer service on their hands.

Rhapsody on TIVO is very buggy right now. Every night I’ve played a playlist and everytime at some point it will hang and error out. The bad thing is that if I don’t reboot TIVO (a 10 minute wait), my whole network seems to go down. This has never happened, ever, prior to using the Rhapsody application.

That said, if TIVO works out these bugs and offers another trial period that goes mostly bug free, then I think this is a great service.

One additional problem I have is the screensaver that pops up. I like to know what song is playing, but unless I have remote in hand, after about 5 minutes I can’t see what song is playing. TIVO could easily pop up the song title and artist as each song plays and then put up the screensaver a minute later. Or better yet, make the screensaver optional. Not all people have plasmas and have to worry about burnin.

    Rhapsody on TiVo…

Ever since I saw this post on TiVo Blog, I have wanted to test drive the new Rhapsody service on TiVo. Well, I have finally had a chance to spend some time playing with the new Rhapsody service, and I have to say that it’s pretty darn good.

It’s really great when it works, but I have same issue as atlsdl reports. Rhapsody crashes. My hardwired tivo network card goes beserk, taking TIVO and the whole network switch offline. I have to reboot tivo and the network switch to get going again. I’ve already got an Ipod docking station and Sirius on my receiver, so I’ll check back on rhapsody in 6 months.

Just got the HD Tivo and have to say the Rhapsody feature, for me, is essentially worthless. I can’t get more than 3 steps into it before it crashes. Ugh. Can’t wait for an upgrade, but I’m not holding my breath. I see that it’s been troublesome since its initial launch with no fix forthcoming.

I love the Rhapsody/Tivo combination… when it works and it doesn’t bug out. I’m waiting until the bugs are fixed, then I will dive in. Rhapsody might just obsolete iTunes.
