CNET: TiVo Desktop 2.5 Review

CNETCNET has published a review of TiVo Desktop 2.5. Overall, the review was positive however, CNET did have a couple of negative things to say including the fact that TiVoToGo is slow. Check it out if you’re interested in reading what others have to say about TiVo Desktop 2.5.

Personally I’m really happy with TiVoDesktop and TiVoToGo in general. It does take a long time to transfer and transcode a show however, I have TiVoDesktop setup to automatically transfer my favorite shows so I really don’t notice how slow it is. In my opinion, it definitely is a lot better than having to pay $1.99 for TV shows off of iTunes.

my biggest issue with 2.5 is the updated directshow filter for playing the .tivo files.

in version 2.3a (which is what i had before upgrading to 2.5) i could watch a tivo recording in windows media player, and there would be slightly more cpu overhead from the tivo encryption than a normal video (one with the tivo stuff stripped out)… but with the directshow filter installed with 2.5, it now takes almost ALL my cpu to watch a tivo recording.

being able to transcode directly from the list is nice, but it isnt worth the cpu-hogging when watching shows. im going to give it maybe a week to see if an update comes out, then im rolling back to 2.3a. not thrilled about having to go back to tivodecode/video9 to get my shows on my psp, but its better than the alternative

I have a question. I purchased the $25.00 media key plus. When I attempt to upgrade to 2.5, the system says that the prior version needs to be removed. Will I loose the $25.00 upgrade key if I upgrade to 2.5 ?

No you will not. I got the same message and my TiVoDestkop Plus license is valid with the new version…
