WeaKnees Isn’t The Only Company Who Sells TiVo Upgrade Drives

DVRupgrade.com Last week I reported that WeaKnees had started to ship upgrade drives for the TiVo HD. Well, if you’re thinking about getting an upgrade drive, you might want to check out DVRupgrade as well. TiVo HD upgrade drives cost about the same from either company (WeaKnees, DVRUpgrade).

I’ve yet to upgrade any of my TiVos so I’m interested to hear what other people think about these two companies. Which company do you prefer? WeaKnees or DVRupgrade?

As a side note, I would like to thank Douglas for putting me down as his TiVo rewards referrer. If you’d like to put me down as your referrer, all you need to do is enter my email address (raianoat AT gmail DOT com) when you activate your TiVo. Thanks Doug!

I’ve had several great experiences with DVRupgrade. I’ve purchased both drive kits and InstantCake from them. Everything works as advertised.

I’ve purchased InstantCake from DVRupgrade in the past and recommended it to many people. I’ve been quite happy with it. Lou Jacob, the founder of DVRupgrade, has been very responsive to emails and he also posts in TiVoCommunity (as tivoupgrade, IIRC).

Both vendors have good products and service. As a blogger and running my own site, DVRupgrade has an affiliate program - WeaKnees doesn’t. So I promote DVRupgrade on my site as an affiliate. But I still link to WeaKnees as well, and I’d sign up as an affiliate with them too if they offered it to give my site readers a choice.

I’ve only had personal experience with Weaknees myself. I purchased an “addon” drive for my Series 2 box a bit over a year ago. When it got to me and I installed it (with fantastic instructions, btw), my TiVo suddenly wouldn’t boot up. After trading a couple of emails with Weaknees support, it turns out it was an issue with the TiVo software version installed on my box at the time.

I mailed both my new and old hard drive back to Weaknees and just a few days later, both were returned to me reformatted with the correct information and it all worked great. Weaknees gave me excellent and quick support on something that was really my fault in the first place for not verifying software version numbers. Kudos to Weaknees.

You’re welcome for the referral. Thank you for the blog!

Now I have to figure out how to upgrade my old Series 2 and the new Series 3 (TiVo HD). Never broke the case on these things. Should be fun!

I prefer to do all of my hacks on my own, but I do like the fact that DVRupgrade.com has licensed some of the tools created by users at DealDatabase.com, allowing for more advanced functionality vs. just a hard drive upgrade. They are the only company to have done so.

I purchased a TIVO series 3 upgraded by Weaknees (they installed the upgrade for me). It worked great, arrived quickly and service was perfect. I highly recommend them.

I needed a new hard drive for my Tivo, so I called Weaknees and placed the order. They were unfriendly, to say the least. I was shocked, since I had read all of the reviews online. Weaknees had great reviews! I figured it was just a fluke.
When the hard drive finally arrived, it was D.O.A. I called the company, and AGAIN they were extremely rude. They don’t identify themselves by name, and act like you are bothering them. I will never order from them again.
