Earlier today I received an email from Dave Zatz letting me know that Capable Networks has purchased TiVoCommunity.com.
TiVoCommunity will now also become part of Capable’s Home Technology Network. This is one of the world’s largest independent consumer electronics advertising networks, currently attracting over 70 million pageviews per month and 20 million unique visitors. The Home Technology Network provides advertisers with access to these audiences by bringing together top online consumer electronics communities, including AVSForum.com, eCoustics.com, RemoteCentral.com and HomeTheaterForum.com.
David Bott, the founder of TiVoCommunity, said that he is looking forward to working closely with Capable Networks on TiVoCommunity and other related projects.
My only hope is that Capable Networks doesn’t change TiVoCommunity too much. TiVoCommunity is truly one of my most favorite websites so I hope that site pretty much stays the same and that the purchase doesn’t have an adverse effect on the community….
Anybody want to buy a blog that is dedicated to TiVo?

I just found a coupon code which allows you to receive 10% off of the price of Roxio Popcorn 3. With this code, you can get Popcorn for $44.99. Amazon has a better price ($42.99
) unfortunately, at the time of this writing you can’t download the software directly from Amazon so, if you want to save a couple of bucks you will have to wait for Amazon to ship you a CD.
To get this discount, all you have to do is enter “ANNIVERSARY” during the checkout process.

Here’s a summary of TiVo’s latest financial numbers. More detailed information can be found here (TiVo press release).
Technology Update
- During the quarter ending July 31st, TiVo released the TiVo HD.
- Comcast services is progressing. Comcast has agreed to fund development work to bring TiVo to additional set top boxes including Scientific Atlantic boxes.
- Comcast has said that they, “we will commence the TiVo rollout process shortly, which will continue rolling out throughout the fall in Comcast’s New England Division including metro Boston, Southeast Massachusetts and New Hampshire”.
- During the quarter DIRECTV announced a deal with TiVo to develop a software upgrade to enhance the user experience for DIRECTV customers who have DIRECTV DVRs with TiVo service.
Financial Numbers
- Second quarter net loss of $17.7 million, which included a combined inventory write-down and inventory purchase commitment charge of $11.2 million, as compared to TiVo’s net loss guidance of $5 to $8 million that didn’t contemplate the inventory related write-down.
- Net loss per share was $0.18.
- Service and technology revenues increased 7% to $56.5 million ($52.8 million for the same period last year).
- Service revenues were $53.4 million (compared to the year ago quarter when service revenues were $49.4 million).
- Technology revenues were $3.1 million, which was lower than expected due to timing of development work related primarily to DIRECTV and international opportunities
Subscriptions
- TiVo-Owned subscription gross additions for the second quarter were 41,000, compared to 74,000 gross additions for the year-ago period
- Overall, TiVo-Owned subscriptions totaled 1.71 million, up 136,000 on an annual basis compared to the year ago-period
- Net decline in DIRECTV TiVo subscriptions during the period as DIRECTV is no longer deploying new TiVo boxes
- Cumulative total subscriptions as of July 31, 2007 were 4.2 million
- Monthly churn rate was 1.2% compared to 1.1% in the prior quarter
Obviously the financial numbers aren’t that positive. That being said, I still think TiVo’s future is looking bright. The Comcast and Cox partnerships should produce a lot of new TiVo subscribers. Once this occurs, TiVo will be able to straighten out its financial situation.

TiVo has been working like crazy to add new content to their growing list of TiVoCast programs. Just today, Stephen Mack (director of TiVoCast operations) announced that TiVo has added JETSET as a new TiVoCast channel.
I went ahead and checked out the most recent episode of JETSET and for the time being I will probably stay subscribed….

Remember back in Aug ‘06 when I published a post which contained TiVo Central Online links that would allow you to record the top 100 movies according to the AFI?
Well, late last week I noticed that TiVo now has a Guru Guide which makes the process of scheduling the top 100 movies even easier. In a little over a week my Series 3 has already recorded six of the top 100 movies.
If you’re interested in recording the top 100 movies you may want to check out TiVo’s AFI Top 100 GuruGuide. It sure is a lot easier then having to setup a Wishlist for 100 movies.

This weekend Amazon Unbox
has made available six movies for 99 cents. The six movies are: 300, Shooter, TMNT, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters, Conversations with Other Women, and Mujeres Infieles / Unfaithful Women. All shows can be downloaded via the Amazon Unbox website
or by access Amazon Unbox directly from your TiVo.
To be honest, I’m really not interested in renting any of these movies. I’m probably going to pass on this weekend’s specials and hope for some better movies next weekend.
