TiVo Rumors Galore: TiVo HD DVR On The Way, eSATA To Be Enabled, TiVoToGo On The Series 3

Series 3 Lite Engadget has published a post which states that they have some reliable information about upcoming TiVo hardware as well as some new features. According to Engadget, the lightweight TiVo DVR that I reported on last week may in fact be released as early as this week. Engadget states that the DVR will cost $300 and that it is expected to have the following features: 160 GB HD, two CableCARD tuners and possibly an ATSC tuner.

Along with this news, Engadget is also reporting that TiVo has plans to enable the eSATA on the Series 3 and that Best Buy will be the exclusive provider for external drives.

In case that wasn’t enough TiVo news for you, Engadget is also reporting that TiVoToGo will be enabled on the Series 3 sometime in the near future. There is one caveat however, TiVo plans on enabling TiVoToGo for SD content only :(.

I would be I’m extremely excited if just one of these rumors ends up being valid. I’d love to see TiVoToGo on my Series 3 even if it were only for SD content. I currently use my Series 2 mainly for TiVoToGo. As far as the eSATA rumor is concerned, I’d be delighted if TiVo were to officially enable this feature. You can never have enough storage when recording HD content. The “TiVo HD” sounds like a nice DVR especially since it won’t cost $800. I’ve always thought that $800 was too much for the Series 3 and it prevents a lot of people from buying one.

What do you think about these rumors? Do they seem legit to you?

Definitely good news all around. I’m still wishing for an HD TiVo for DISH Network, but I doubt that’ll ever happen. Too bad cable sucks around here.

Not so surprising that TiVoToGo won’t be enabled (at least right away) for HD content. Those files have to be massive! And of course there’s also a lot more content protection to be dealt with in moving them around. Any word on multi-room viewing? That’s what I definitely need.

These are great and all, but until the CableCARD and SDV issue is resolved, I’ll have to keep waiting. TWC in Austin is a mess.

The price drop is a great sign though. I’ll be very happy if that happens.

I’d like to retire my Series 2, since I only keep it around for TiVo To Go. I bought the S3 and transfered my lifetime subscription to it. So it would be nice to get the To Go feature on the S3 before my free year on the S2 runs out.

And I already have an “unofficial” eSATA drive on my S3. So how will Best Buy be an “exclusive” provider (unless it will be just TiVo branded drives).

BTW, I saw an S3 at my local Best Buy,first time at a brick-and-mortar retailer.

Now it would be nice if TiVo offered Lifetime transfers for the TiVo HD Lite so I can migrate my parents lifetime to it :-)

TiVo has confirmed to me that eSATA support is slated for this fall and MRV/TTG are still under development for the Series3/HD platform.

Nice! TTG on my S3 is going to be sweet!
