Take a listen to my Series 3 TiVo. Does it sound like something is wrong with it? The sound never seems to go away even after I reboot. Is this normal for the Series 3 or does my Series 3 have issues? Let me know if your S3 makes the same sound…
I’m getting a little worried that I may have to ship my S3 back. I’d hate to have to go through getting two CableCARDs to work with a new S3 now that I have two installed in my existing S3 (more on this later tonight or tomorrow).

Not that it’s conclusive proof that your S3 is under the weather, but mine is silent. Isn’t one of the requirements for THX certification that the unit itself must be very quiet?
That sounds pretty bad. By comparison, my Series3 is virtually silent.
It sounds like you’ve got a bad radiator, I’d see if you can exchange it for one that won’t overheat on you.
No, that’s very wrong. The S3 is almost completely silent. It sounds like something is loose and rattling – could be a cable touching the fan, could be the fan itself. You can always try the ’stick something in the fan to stop it’ trick and see if the noise stops. If it does, then it is the fan. If not, then it is the drive – and a drive that sounds like that is doomed.
If you do have to ship it back – keep the cards. When the new box comes, put them in the new box and call the cable company with all the info – card ID, MAC address, card number, and the appropriate Host ID. I had to replace my S3 and I did that and avoided another truck roll.
I never really put my ear to my Series3, but I checked tonight after hearing your MP3.
Just like the previous posters, my S3 is almost silent. The most I hear is a faint electrical humming.
Sorry for the bad news. What a pain!
maybe thats the new version with the “nature sounds” (crickets) .. did you try the snooze button?
jk .. definitely doesn’t sound healthy
Thanks for all the feedback. I’ve since called TiVo and they are going to ship me a new S3 (it was extremely easy to get a new s3, nice job TiVo). I agree that it could be an issue with the fan/heat sink since the sound starts shortly after the box is up and running.
Thanks again and stay tuned for info on how it goes when I try and swap out my two cablecards.
