They've got to be stripping out the HD. Most of the other stuff they could take out wouldn't save them that much.

Basically, it's going to be a slightly upgraded Series 2.

mostls1y3web01.itsdo.sbc.com/yphome/adslogin.asp

So with CableCARD and all the baggage that comes with it (no MRV or PC transfer) you get to exclude the 1/4 to 1/3 of people (like me) who have Satellite? Sounds like a plan!

Seriously, what we need more is a CableCARDless Series3 with Component input (HDMI is controlled by the Mafiaa so is no better than CableCARD) and IR blaster, yes the channel changing will be a little slower but it will work with any HD signal not just Digital Cable.

No HD.

In other words, a Series2 with CableCARD, MPEG4, digital sound, etc. And maybe include built-in WiFi. Would let you truly record two shows at once (not one cable, one analog, like today's Series2). No more digital cable box with goofy IR repeater.

Series2 is great for analog cable, but it's really clumsy for digital cable.

So:

Analog Cable & OTA - Series2 - Free
Digital Cable - (new) Series3 SD - $199 and falling
HD Cable - Series3 HD - $499 and falling

As it is the Series3 is lacking in features compared to my Series2 units, not sure what they could strip out at this point.

They could go with a single tuner, something that wouldn't be that big of a deal for most people, but how much would that save?

They could go with a smaller Hard Drive, which would make the thing pretty useless as an HD TivO.

They could forgo the CableCARD slots and make it OTA only, that would probably reduce the cost significantly and enable them to add more features that were stripped out of the Series3. I don't know what they pay in licensing to CableLabs but I wouldn't be urprised if it were substantial.
