TiVo Desktop 2.4 Comes Out Of Beta Without Vista Support

TiVo Desktop 2.4 is now out of public beta. TiVo’s download page doesn’t list what has changed so I can only assume that this release contains mainly bug fixes.

According to the system requirements, this version does not support Vista.

System Requirements:

  • A Personal computer running Microsoft® Windows® XP, Service Pack 2. TiVo Desktop does not yet work with Windows Vista.
  • 500 megahertz processor
  • 256 MB RAM
  • 5 GB free disk space
  • TiVoToGo and Web video downloads are not yet available for Series3.

See the Read Me file in the Start Menu after installation for more information.

I’m kind of surprised that TiVo would release TiVo desktop 2.4 without support for Vista. After all, you can hardly buy a machine now a days with Windows XP installed on it. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see another release in the next couple of days that supports Vista. Stay tuned for any updates…

TiVo Series 3 Service Update (8.3)

Dave Zatz has alerted me to the fact that TiVo has started to roll out a software update for the Series 3 TiVo. This update appears to include a number of new features and bug fixes.

…. In addition to what I assume are several under-the-hood bug fixes, this update includes More Options for programming, a HD Category for search, and TiVoCast partner logos.

The HD category search feature sounds an awful lot like the same feature which is going to be in all Comcast TiVo boxes.

Have you received the 8.3 software update for your Series 3 TiVo? Is there a new feature in 8.3 which I haven’t listed in this post?

What Do You Like/Dislike About Amazon Unbox On Your TiVo?

TiVo Amazon UnboxChris Pew of webtvhub.com has posted an interesting poll in which he asks the question: “What do you dislike about Amazon Unbox On TiVo?”. Chris has also posted another poll on TiVoCommunity in which he found out that ~44% of the respondents where unhappy with Amazon Unbox on TiVo.

Personally, I’m rather happy with Unbox on my TiVo. I watched a show the other night and the quality was pretty good. The only thing I don’t like is the fact it sometimes take a while for the shows to download. What do you think about Unbox on the TiVo? Head on over to webtvhub.com and let Chris know.

$500 is still a lot of money but it has me thinking that I should get a Series 3. I’m currently using a Time Warner DVR for my HD content however, I’m extremely unhappy with the DVR. The only thing that is nice about my SA 8300 is that I didn’t have to pay anything up front and if it breaks all I have to do is go down to my cable company’s local office and pick up another one.

Are you going to get a Series 3 TiVo now that you can get it for $500?

Announcing The TiVo Planet Dashboard Widget

I just upload a simple OS X dashboard widget that I created with Yahoo Pipes and Apple’s dashcode development environment. The widget displays content from several of the top TiVo related websites/blogs. Currently the widget subscribes to the following websites/blogs.

One of the nice things about using Yahoo Pipes is that I can add a new feed whenever I want and anybody who is using the widget will automatically start to receive content from the newly added feed.

Version 1.0 can be downloaded by clicking on this link or by visiting the “downloads” section of this website.

TiVo Planet Dashboard Widget

Let me know if you encounter any problems of if there is a feed that you would like me to add. I’m also looking for some help in sprucing the widget up. Let me know if you’re interested.
