TiVo Launches Movie Download Service Via Amazon Unbox
This morning I was honestly a little surprised when I read on TiVoLovers.com that the TiVo/Amazon video download service has gone live. When I reported on this exactly a month ago, I expected that the service wouldn’t be available until later this year if not early next year. Apparently there are some people working overtime at both TiVo and Amazon :).
For a limited time, Amazon is offering a $15 credit if you sing up for this new service. Basically you have nothing to lose so give it a try….
Connecting your TiVo to the Amazon Unbox service is extremely easy. TiVo.com has published a great set of instructions to help you get started. In a matter of minutes, I was able to connect my TiVo to the service and download my first movie (Little Miss Sunshine). I honestly haven’t had a chance to watch this movie yet however, I plan on doing a review of the service later tonight or tomorrow. Stay tuned for a review.

And a big thank you to the beta testers who helped ensure the speedy role out of this great addition to Tivo.

Alex,
I submitted this to you as a tip via the ‘Contact Me’ link up top - did you not get it? (I noticed you said you picked it up from reading TL.)

Anyone know the details of the $15 credit? Can’t seem to find anything on it. Thought I might get an email or see a credit on Amazon. Nothing yet - registered a couple of days back

It just shows up as a discount when you check out.

Just wondering how long it takes to DL it and where it is placed… is it on the now playing list or is a new menu created? Does it really take 15 minutes to download

It ends up in the Now Playing List - an an ‘Amazon Unbox’ folder if you have groups turned on.
And it can take up to 15 minutes to *start* downloading. But the full download times vary depending on the size of the file and the speed of your broadband connection. For me files generally download in better than real time - so a two hour movie downloads in less than two hours, maybe an hour to an hour and a half. Sometimes faster, sometimes slower - it probably depends on the server load and the load on the net in general. Other users report that downloads take longer than real time for them.
