TiVo Now Offers Lifetime Subscription Transfer From A DirecTiVo To A Series 3 TiVo

Series 3 TiVoBoth WeaKnees and TiVoLovers are reporting that TiVo now allows you to transfer a lifetime subscription from a DirecTiVo to a Series 3 TiVo. Previously, this transfer option was only available for non-DIRECTV TiVos. According to WeaKnees, this offer is available until 12/31 so you better hurry if you are going to do it.

I haven’t been able to find anything on TiVo’s website that says they are offering this promotion. Somebody on TiVoLover’s website has said that this offer does work however; I would still recommend that you call (866-424-8486) just to make sure that you can in fact transfer your lifetime subscription. I’d hate to see somebody buy a S3 and not be able to transfer the subscription.

Thanks MegaZone!

But the new MonolithMC HD is a true TiVO killer in my opinion whith its dual HD tuner and no monthly fee cost.

Stoykisk - No CableCARD means no encrypted digital cable channels, at least without a box, which means it isn’t a real competitor for the S3. It is $1000, that’s what an S3 costs at full MSRP with a lifetime transfer. Of course, the S3 has been sold for as low as $511, and is generally available for $650-680, and 3 years is $299. So you can also get an S3 with three years of service for less. In three years you might be looking for the next generation.

And if they get big enough, since they record with no DRM and allow transfers, the MPAA will come knocking on their door.

Alex - I also posted about the transfer at TiVoCommunity.com, in the S3 forum, and other people have made the transfer successfully. So it looks like it is for real.

I’m upset and think Tivo is doing themselves in (via DirecTV/Dish or whomever’s legal hindrances probably). By not offering satellite tv capability, like the series 2 have, they’ve just shut themselves out of a large and ever-growing market while simultaneously locking themselves into the shrinking cable market. Who cares if it’s HD, really, if you can’t get satellite broadcasts with it.

I for one, would have upgraded for the $199 they are offering to give me the new series, three and transfer my lifetime subscription. Just paying that for what would have been an upgrade to a 300 gig drive and be able to store way more hours of standard def broadcasts would have been a clincher in and of itself, never mind the HD capability. But not working with my DirecTV service ruins the whole thing.

I mean, here they had an upgrade cheaper than going to weaKnees, I get to keep my lifetime and get to keep my old DVR too with free service on that for one year. Like I said, that’s a bargain I was ready to take and jazzed about it too! Then I find it won’t work on my system like my current Humax DVR with DirecTV or Dish and I’m sunk. Back to considering the pricey weaKnees guys.

I’m bummed and I think TiVo made a big mistake on this one.

I’m sure no one will read this. Oh well, I had to carp somewhere.
