A couple of people have asked me how they can go about transferring their lifetime subscription to the new Series 3 TiVo. If you want to do this, you can need to purchase your TiVo using this page.
The instructions on the page are as follows:
1. Buy your TiVo Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder for $799.99.
2. Once your new box arrives within 7-10 days*, call our VIP line at (866) 424-8486 and we’ll transfer service for $199. You will need your TiVo Service Number** for your new and old box ready to process the transfer.

You do not NEED to purchase it from that link or any tivo site. I purchased mine at Circuit City and had my lifetime transfered just fine.
And by the way… The offer expires December 31 2006.

the tivo page at tivo.com/vip states in the fine print:
Series3 HD DVR must be purchased through TiVo.com. DVRs purchased through retail channels are not eligible.
Contradictory info, here. Question: If they have honored this off with retail purchases, will they now stop?
Good point Tom. Can anybody else confirm that you don’t need to purchase the Series 3 from TiVo.com in order to get the lifetime transfer option?
TiVo allowed you to do the transfer even though their policy states that you must buy the DVR off of TiVo.com?
Yes TiVo allowed me transfer. Also weaKnees.com has an advertised deal right now. TiVo with transfer.
