Series 3 TiVo Hands On

Series 3 TiVo FrontLike I said yesterday, the Series 3 news just keeps on coming in. This time our buddy Dave Zatz posted several videos and pictures of the Series 3 TiVo in action. I’m not sure how he got his hands on one but the sneaky chump did :) .

Here’s a summary of what he found out:

  • The unit will cost $799
  • No TiVoToGo, Multi-Room Viewing or External Hard Drive just yet
  • The service fee remains at $12.95/month or $6.95/month for those individuals who already have a non-bundled unit subscription. Everybody else will have to sign up for a subscription ($155.40 for one year or $299 for two years)
  • For $200, you will be able to transfer a lifetime subscription from one of your old TiVos to the Series 3.
  • For $299, you will be able to get a three year subscription to the TiVo service
  • Units go on sale today at TiVo.com. They will be available in BestBuy and CircuitCity shortly (as of this writing they are not on TiVo.com).

I’ve decided against a Series 3. $800 is too steep, and I can’t get the sports packages with cable card (hockey and/or baseball). I’ve got Cox, so I’ll wait to download the tivo software on a Cox DVR.

    Ditto on what TimP said.

I have been anxiously been awaiting this day ever since I got my HD TV, now it is here and it could not be more anitclimatic for me.

I’ll be wating for the Comcast incarnation of TiVo.

Unfortunately, I have to agree. This is completely anticlimatic.

I waited pretty long for this, but $799 for a machine that can only record _30_ hours of HD. And they “are still evaluating” if you can use an external HD. The external HD was the only thing making this worth it, as then you could have had just the one unit with a total of 1.25 terrabyte (once the 1 TB HDs come out later this year).

And no TivoToGo, so you can’t watch HD on your laptop. Or even normal definition in case you replaced your old box with this?

Space, TivoToGo, and way better usability were the only three reasons to buy this instead of the cox box. The better usability I’ll get next year for free with the software upgrade to the TiVo software. The other two they cut out.

I was ready to buy, but…

If I understand things, the new unit does not support satellite recievers?

It’s hard to understand why Tivo would write off that big a subset of their customers, when a simple 50 cent IR cable would suffice, like with the current boxes….

My only option going forward is to leave Tivo, given that I use Dish Network.

The Series 3 will not work satellite service. Sorry :( .

  • his is insane. The thing cost about half the price of my TV. I am a TiVo fan but this is too much. Screw TiVo. I hope Apple’s iTV make this crap absolete. Bye bye TiVo.
