What’s Going On With TiVo HME?

TiVo HMEIs it just me or does it seem like TiVo HME development has come to a grinding halt?. Remember back in June ‘05 how TiVo sponsered a developer challenge? Well, ever since then it seems like HME development has slowed down considerably. Even the developer of Galleon? has said that he is discouraged with the lack of support and updates TiVo is providing. What’s going on with HME? TiVo hasn’t released an update to the API since 10/31/2005!

I personally would like to see new HME apps. In my opinion, it’s one of the best features that TiVo has to offer.

Is anybody willing to offer up some prizes for a competition? How about a new car or a 50 inch plasma :)? No seriously, is anybody interested in sponsoring a developer challenge to get TiVo HME application development started back up?

The mailing list has been dead for months too. It’s obvious TiVo is using this internally to produce various apps (Idol Speculation contest, on-box KidZone subscription stuff I saw slides of), but not a whole lot seems to be going on publicly. I’ve heard whispers on the TCF of new features coming to the platform, but haven’t seen anything yet. I think Kyle is still beefing up his AudioFaucet HME app — hopefully we’ll see a formal release soon!

If we all band together with our little Niche businesses, maybe we could come up with an outstanding prize package.

Ill put up 50 Printed T-Shirts!

AudioFaucet is still under developement — coming along well. Kyle has been traveling quite a bit, so development has slowed recently, but there are some neat new features we are working on for the final release. Both Kyle and I have next week off, so with any luck a new version of AudioFaucet will be on tap. Ok. That was a wicked bad joke. :-)

    John,
Make sure you keep us update on the status of AudioFaucet. In fact, feel free to contact me when you release a new update.

I hate to say it, but lack of HME applications is a reason for me to go to Windows Media Center Edition or MythTV. My house is wired with X10 and just about everything is networked. I’ve used Galleon, but found it wasn’t stable.

BTW when are they going to remove the damn “Build Your Own Lexus” applett??

I just started working on one. I’m making a Blockbuster app to view/modify your Blockbuster Online queue. So far so good. I’ve got a lot of the view part done. Not sure how it’s going to work on a Series3 though.

Sounds great! Let me know when you have something available. I’d love to be able to manage my bb queue via my TiVo.

Quick update. I’ve got most of the Movie Rental app working. It works with Galleon or you can use it with the HME sdk standalone. It’s not as friendly when you have errors right now such as login failures and such. It will just display an empty queue. I’m working on getting it set up on SourceForge. I got a Series3 and yes it works on the S3 to some extent. It seems that the S3 actually stretches the display, but it does work. Over time hopefully I’ll get it displaying a little better on the S3.
