TiVo Releases 802.11G Wireless Adapter

TiVo 802.11g wireless adapter
Dave Zatz is first to report that TiVo is now selling a TiVo branded 802.11g wireless adapter on their site. If anybody ends up buying one of these adapters let me know. I’d be more then happy to post your review.

I currently use a Linksys USB200M network adapter for my TiVo and an 802.11g wireless network for the rest of my computer devices. I’m interested to see how well this adapter performs. I ran cat-5 to a couple of rooms when I was getting ready for TiVoToGo. If it turns out that this adapter performs well, I may end up getting one for myself.

I ordered one the other day because I couldn’t find a compatible adapter in stores locally given the enormous rebate offered on Series 2 Tivo for the holidays. It ended up being costing nearly $58 after tax and shipping, and is due to arrive in the next few days.

I almost broke down and bought the Linksys WUSB11, but I am running a wireless G network and don’t want the B unit to interfere with my connection on my other machines.

I’ll let you know how the Tivo branded unit works – anyone have an idea who is manufacturing these for Tivo (Linksys, DLink, etc)?

    Thanks

  • Matt,
According to a couple of sites, this is the chipset that is being used:

I don’t think that answers your question though.

  • This is a TiVo designed adapter, not OEM’d from one of the major brands. I don’t know which contract manufacturer they’re using however.

But the problem is you are still using WEP from what I am hearing. And to have better security for your wireless you need to have at least WPA.

  • Sam,
That is correct! TiVo doesn’t currently (12/30/05) support WPA. This is one the reasons why I ran cat5 directly to my TiVo. There are ways to do it (via a bridge) however, I didn’t want to screw around with it. Besides, TiVoToGo is better with a cat5 connection instead of wireless.

  • [...] I just placed an order for one of those TiVo branded wireless adapters. I could have gone with one of the other cheaper adapters on the recommended adapter list however, I’ve heard good things about this adapter and ever since it came out, I’ve wanted to give it a try. Unfortunately, the adapter is on backorder so I’ll have to wait a little while. I’m willing to wait because a number of people that I respect (Dave Zatz, Mostly Muppet) have said good things about it. I’ll let everybody know how well it performs as soon as it arrives. I plan on running a couple of tests to see how long it takes me to transfer a show wirelessly as opposed to using my current wired setup. Stay tuned… [...]

  • I am using the Tivo branded adapter now….It fixed my random reboot issue where the tivo would reboot everytime I tried to transfer recordings, but Its performance is AWFUL! 10.5 hours to transfer a single 1 hour show at best quality!!! That is twice as slow as my Dlink adapter?? Any ideas??

For testing purposes, the only wireless security I am using is MAC filtering.

  • Oh and I get 90-100% signal. No security bashing…wireless security is as much a joke as Microsoft OS’s….how many times have you seem “Could allow an attacker to gain complete control”….yup 4 or five every other tuesday!

  • Deek,
Have you tried accessing your TiVo directly without using TiVo desktop? (https://your_tivos_ip). See if your download times are better via this interface then TiVo desktop. I’ve never experienced transfer speeds that were that slow. Anybody else have any ideas?

  • Interesting, didn’t know it even had one?? I get between 80 and 90 Kbps which is close to 0.75 mbps or a half a t-1…slowwwwww……especially from a setup that should approach 40mbps xfer rates….

    Anyone anyone….

    Deek
