What To Get Your TiVo Addict For Christmas

Updated: 12/13/05: After seeing a couple of other site’s holiday shopping lists, I noticed that I may have published this post too early. Needless to say, I’ve decided to republish it with a couple of updates.

Do you have a TiVo addict on your shopping list? If yes, here’s a list of items that every TiVo geek would love to have under their Christmas tree.

  • Avcast Media Kit: This device will allow you to watch your TiVo from any room in the house. As a matter of fact, I did a review on it a while back.
  • 40-HR TiVo: Any TiVo addict would love to have another TiVo in the house. Besides, they’re dirt cheap now! If you get your TiVo lover an extra TiVo, make sure you buy them network adapters (see below) so that both TiVos can be connected to each other.
  • TiVo Hacks: There are a number of good TiVo books out there however, this one seems to be the best.
  • Slingbox: I’ve heard nothing but good things about this device. A Slingbox allows you to watch your TiVo recordings from anywhere including work and on the road.
  • Network Adapter: Make sure you get one of the officially supported adapters. I’ve used both the Linksys WUSB11 and the Linksys USB200M
  • Three Month TiVo Gift Subscription: Just make sure your TiVo addict doesn’t have a lifetime subscription already :) .
  • TiVo Upgrade Drive: How about an upgrade drive from DVRUpgrade?

Anybody else have any suggestions?

  • Regarding the “officially supported” network adapters, my TiVo sports an old Compaq networking adapter I picked up at Best Buy off the clearance rack for $5 (and it came with a USB cable that Best Buy would have changed $30 for). Not only is it not “supported”. I was told by a TiVo rep that it wouldn’t work. Thankfully they were wrong.

Been using it since networking wasn’t supported at all, using the ,#301 trick with the 3.2 software. My TiVo has never been hooked up to a phone line once, heck I don’t even know (or care) if the modem works.

I guess this doesn’t have anything to do with your list though :-)

  • If they’re the type of person who likes universal remotes, you could get them one of those, like for example one of the Logitech Harmony remotes.

Gift subscriptions aren’t allowed for anyone who already has service. They are only for new activations.

  • K,
    Really! I didn’t know that…I’ll update my post once I get home :) .
