[...] Yesterday I received a 40 hr TiVo that I plan on giving to my mother-in-law. I received this TiVo through the $100 Dockers special offer. In my opinion, this is one of the best promotions TiVo has put together thus far. For $100 I got $100 worth of Dockers clothing, a 40 hr. TiVo and 3 months worth of the TiVo subscription. To top it all off, this offer was in place prior to TiVo requiring a 1 year commitement so my mother-in-law won’t be forced to pay for a year if she doesn’t like the service (I can’t imagine why she won’t like her TiVo).
Will,
I've never upgraded a TiVo box however; if I did, I would probably pay the extra amount of money and go with an upgrade kit. I'm not sure that it is necessary however; I know that I would just feel better about going with something that has detailed instructions. Also, if you run into problems with an upgrade kit, I'll bet you that there is at least somebody to call.

I am anxiously awaiting the arival of MY free Tivo. This is my first Tivo, so I haven't been sleeping too well since I mailed the form in! :-) The store I went to didn't have a display nor did the cashier know what I was talking about when I asked for the form. I had to show her the ad. Finally, someone from the customer service deptartment found a form.

I too found a pretty poor selection. I was able to pick around and find enough stuff to add up to $100, but I now have a LOT of Dockers socks!

I'm already researching ways to upgrade the drive space on my Tivo because my fiance is a Days of Our Lives, Dr. Phil, Oprah, Survivor, Joey, American Idol, Bachelor,(etc, etc, etc) FREAK! I'm mostly getting it just to keep from getting yelled at for messing up one of her four VCR's! After reading some of these entries I'm starting to think that there won't be any room for even one eposode of Most Extreme Elimination Challenge!

This brings up a question. I've been browsing some of the DIY instructions online for upgrading and some of them seem complicated. I've installed DVD burners in my friends PCs, so I know what the inside of one looks like. I have no experience with linux. I know what a IDE cable is. A little fuzzy on the whole primary master / secondary master / slave / jumper terminology.

Should I do it all myself or just buy a kit? What have been your experiences with upgrading? Is it worth the savings to do it all myself?

Thanks in advance.

My wife and I went to JC Penney last night, but alas:

 1. They had a lot of pants but not so many shirts.
 2. The few shirts they did have I found to be atrocious.

We will probably try another JC Penney tonight and then we'll look at the $50 (after $150 mail-in rebate) TiVo offer as well as the Slingbox, which is not a TiVo but does some of the multi-room viewing stuff that we're after.
