Happy Birthday TiVoBlog!

It’s hard to believe that TiVoBlog.com has been up and running for one year now. This past year has been great. The site has grown to be a lot bigger then I would have expected. Thanks for all your support and make sure that you continue to check back often!

Thanks,
Alex (tivogeek)

My Kind Of Bank, Compass Bancshares Offers A Free TiVo

Now this is my kind of bank! Isn’t this a lot better then a frisbee or some other useless gift? If only I needed a home equity loan :).

Nation’s Most Influential Inventions

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office museum has selected TiVo as one of the most influential patents ever established. According to CNet, the exhibit:

..showcases the technology in a doll-size diorama of a living room. “Set to upbeat music, a video loop displayed on a TV on the ‘living room’ wall highlights the benefits of TiVo’s Time Warp patent,” which allows viewers to store and play back TV shows, according to a statement.

Does anybody have a picture of this? I would love to see it.

40hr TiVo Plus Lifetime Subscription For $299!

There are only a couple days left to get a 40 hr TiVo and a lifetime subscription for only $299.00. If you are thinking about getting a TiVo now is the time to do it. The offer expires on 7/27! To take advantage of this great offer, head on over to TiVo’s website or call 1-866-GET-TiVo (1-866-438-8486).

To put this into perspective, my first 60 hr. TiVo cost me $200 at BestBuy 1 ½ years ago. With this offer you are getting a 40 hr TiVo plus lifetime subscription!

If you do decide to get it, I would appreciate it if you put me down as your referrer (raianoat AT gmail DOT com). I’m only two referrals away from a Mini iPod ;).

TiVo Releases New Ad Feature

TiVo Box

TiVo has released a new advertising feature to approximately 1,000,000 of its’ subscribers. As far as I can tell, this is the feature that was announced back in November of ‘04. If anybody has a screenshot of it let me know. I would be more then happy to post it on this site. In the meantime we will have to wait and see how it works.

It sure does sound like a great way for TiVo to get more revenue. According to TiVo:

“They (viewers) are spending two to four minutes engaged in the brand — that is what makes that so valuable,” he said. “We see between 5-and-30 percent of people who enter the (enhanced) showcases will release their names to that company.”

Updated 08/08/05: PVRBlog has posted a screenshot of what the new ad system looks like. Check it out here…

My TiVo Takes The Summer Off

TiVo

Believe it or not, I don’t spend all of my time in front of the TV enjoying my TiVo. As a matter of fact, I haven’t been using TiVo that much lately. It looks as thought a lot of people are doing the same thing. Must have something to do with the nice weather we’ve been having in upstate New York ;). Does your TiVo usage change in the summer? I know that mine does.

Wouldn’t It Be Great If TiVo Had These Features?

TiVo Box

Here’s a list of features that I would like TiVo to incorporate into the existing generation of TiVo DVR (Series 2) or at the very least into the next generation (Series 3?). This list will continue to grow as I think of new add-ons. Let me know if you have any thoughts that you think I should add.

  • Multiple tuners: How many times do you have to stop recording a show because another show that you like is on. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a multi-tuner TiVo that didn’t require you to go with DirecTV?
  • HME Apps: I know HME is still in beta however, I’d like to hear some type of time table as to when TiVo plans on deploying HME apps to the “regular” user.
  • Multiple user support: Don’t show me my wife’s recordings. I’m sick of seeing “Friends” & “Dawson’s Creek” in my “Now Playing List”. Would this be too difficult for the average user? Maybe it could be a sorting option in the “Now Playing List”?
  • What Is The Life Expectancy Of A TiVo?

A good friend of mine called me yesterday and told me that his TiVo was dead! Apparently, he came home the other day and his TiVo was stuck booting up. He pulled the plug several times however; nothing seemed to work. After a call to TiVo tech support, he determined that his TiVo’s hard drive was dead. My friend’s problem made me think, how long does the average TiVo last? My buddy’s TiVo was less then one year old! How long have you had your TiVo?
