Getting Ready For TiVoToGo

Just recently I started to optimize my TiVo setup for TiVoToGo. I ran CAT5 directly to my TiVo so that I don’t have to use 802.11b. I know that TiVo does not currently support USB2.0 however; once the anticipated upgrade comes out, I will be all set. Along with the network drop directly to my TiVo, I’ve also put a couple drops in other rooms throughout the house. Hopefully this extra speed with allow me to transfer my shows in near real-time. Another thing that I’ve considered doing is upgrading my server with more disc space. I know that once I start copying my shows to the server I will find that the space gets eaten up pretty quick. If you are interested in running CAT5 to your TiVo I would recommend going with the USB200M adapter from Linksys. My series 2 TiVo detected the adapter as soon as I plugged it in. I was up and running within five minutes!

As a side note, I’ve also noticed that HMO seems to be a lot faster. I’ve especially noticed the speed while viewing my pictures.

I used the Linksys USB100M, which uses a similar connector to the USB200M, and I had lots of connection problems with it. The ethernet cable constantly came loose from the USB100M if the wire was moved, usually because my cats went behind my a/v rack. It made HMO unusable, and Tivo frequently was unable to connect for it’s daily calls.

I switched to a Netgear FA120, which is also a USB 2.0 ethernet adapter, but it has an actual jack to plug the cable into. All the connection problems vanished, and HMO works fine.

That’s good to know. Hopefully I don’t have the same kind of problem with my setup.

Not a big fan of the Linksys USB200M, too flimsy for my tastes, looks like it could break very easily. I went w/ the beefier D-Link DUB-E100, works great too.

[...] I currently use a Linksys USB200M network adapter for my TiVo and an 802.11g wireless network for the rest of my computer devices. I’m interested to see how well this adapter performs. I ran cat-5 to a couple of rooms when I was getting ready for TiVoToGo. If it turns out that this adapter performs well, I may end up getting one for myself. [...]

[...] This past weekend, I finally got the chance to install my new TiVo branded wireless adapter. Prior to installing this adapter, I had my TiVo connected to my network via a Linksys USB200M adapter. The Linksys adapter has worked fine however, I recently moved my TiVo into the living room and I’ve been too lazy to run a new network run. Also, I’m going to be moving soon and I don’t think that I am going to run wire in the new house. I use to have a 802.11b wireless adapter for my TiVo however, when TiVoToGo was about to be released I upgraded to a wired connection. [...]

I can’t get a program update from TIVO through my wireless network. When I go to Connecting, Preparing signals Done, as does Connecting. In the Getting Info step, it shows “downloading” for several minutes and then I get a “Connection Interrupted” message. I contacted TIVO, my ISP and Linksys and got no help. I am able to download pictures (JPEG format) from my desktop to TIVO and view a slide show. Thanks for your help.
