Banner Ads With Your Commercials
The news that PVRblog hinted at is in fact bad news for TiVo. TiVo has decided to implement banner ads and popup ads that will appear while you fast-forward past your beloved commercials.
Is it just me or does it seem as though TiVo has decided to give in to a lot of advertising and big media demands as of late. I’m not sure that this is a smart move for TiVo. I realize that TiVo is trying to keep both the consumer and advertisers happy however; I feel as though the consumer has taken some major hits as of late. Stop adding features for the advertising community and start adding features that the consumer wants. In the end, the consumer is the entity that ultimately purchases a TiVo. Without a consumer, TiVo has nobody!
Update: According to this author, TiVoBlog has helped contribute to a “Mini Web Panic”!
Update: It appears as though several people believe that this bit of news is in fact a bunch of hysteria. Because of this, I’ve decided to add the following comment that I posted on Sflare.com:
…TiVo seems to be adding these features without any concern for the consumer. I understand that they are trying to generate revenue however; this type of feature is not something that any normal consumer would say that they want. Take for example the recent decision to allow for limitations on the amount of time you can keep your pay-per view programming. All I was trying to do on my site was let TiVo know that they need to keep the consumer in mind when they consider a new feature

This might not be so bad. As long as the ads are small banners and they dissapear as soon as I stop fast fowarding. Hopefully this will open up a major stream of revenue for TiVo!

This is true however; the only thing that irritates me is that TiVo is adding a bunch of “features” that the consumer really doesn’t want/need. I hope that once TiVoToGo comes out it will quench my thirst for new features :).

I found this blog looking for metions of the TiVo ad pop-ups. Since it didn’t seem to exist I just used the RSS2 feed to create a syndicated feed for Live Journal users: http://www.livejournal.com/users/tivoblog/
I don’t think this is that big a deal. It is a minor change, and I’m far more interested in TiVoToGo than this.

Tivo Hysteria
Well aren’t we all getting into a tizzy over nothing?
It seems that Tivo is going to extend its advertising a little further. Not only will there be star items on the menu, but when people are fast forwarding through commercials (no mention of the …

Fast Forwarding Ads in Tivo
I feel obligated to add my two cents on the now famous decision to put banner ads in Tivo when a user fast forwards past commercials. There are some pithy comments here at Build Your Own PVR, TivoBlog.com, Thomas Hawk,…

This idea stinks. When I first heard this news, I considered cancelling TiVo and getting Replay. That’s only delaying the inevitable since Replay will soon follow suit. Also, I have put some chunk of cash into self-upgrading my TiVo (larger hard drives, wireless access). Our only option is to continue to hack our DVRs and remove this option or find a way to block them just as we do pop-up ads while surfing via PC. That’s what I am going to do anyway. Where there’s a will there is a way. TiVo is forcing my meddling hands…

But the “pop ups” referred to are nothing like the pop-ups you get while browsing. They’re a banner that appears on screen just like the thumbs up icon sometimes appears already.
There aren’t any extra buttons you have to hit, there’s nothing slowing your fast forward. Everything works just like it did before unless you voluntarily choose to see more.
