For those of you who don’t know, Guru Guides are a great way to schedule a set of similar records on your TiVo with only a couple of mouse clicks. In addition to the Holiday guides, TiVo has published several other Guides that are worth checking out including AFI’s 100 Years…100 Movies. If you haven’t already, head on over to TiVo.com to see a complete list of all the Guru Guides that TiVo has to offer. TiVo recently announced a new feature that I honestly forgot to mention. Luckily, a friendly reader of this site (Matthew) sent me a Tip to remind me of this news. In case you missed it, TiVo now allows you to search Netflix’s Instant Watch catalog directly from within TiVo’s new search capability. As you’ll see from the screenshots below, I was able to use this new feature to watch one of my most favorite Christmas movies (A Christmas Story). The ability to search for Watch Instant movies is a great feature and it has been something I’ve been looking for ever since Netflix became available on TiVo. Take a look at this new feature and be sure to let TiVo know what you think (keep in mind that TiVo Search is still in BETA). Update 12/13 @ 8:22AM: The winner is….Matt! Thanks to everybody who participated. Here’s a little giveaway to help celebrate the Holiday Season. Simply leave a comment on this post letting me know that you’d like to receive this TiVo t-shirt (Large). I’ll pickup the cost of shipping (assuming you live in the continental USA). Best of luck and Happy Holidays! Thanks to Amazon, there really is no need to worry if you miss out on BestBuy’s great deal. From now until Dec. 5th, Amazon.com is offering a free TiVo HD when you purchase a qualifying Panasonic HDTV!
In case you haven’t noticed, the price of the TiVo HD has dropped a lot within the past month. Just recently TiVo reduced the base price of the TiVo HD down to $249.99. Along with this offer, TiVo has for some time offered refurbished TiVo HDs for as little as $199.99. Some people have speculated that this could mean that new hardware is on its way while others tend to disagree with this speculation. While I’d love to see new hardware (or a new UI), I’m still not convinced that TiVo is ready for a new hardware release (this is based on no real evidence, just my opinion). What do you think? Do you think we are going to see something big at CES 2010? Spotted on TiVo’s Twitter feed and TiVoCommunity. Earlier today, TiVo announced their third quarter financial results. Along with the usual financial numbers (which I honestly find kind of boring), TiVo’s CEO (Tom Rogers) spoke about a number of different topics which are worth mentioning. In terms of the DirecTV partnership, Rogers said that TiVo is on track to launch next year. Hopefully this time TiVo will follow through on their promise. I know that there are a lot of people out there who are extremely interested in getting their hands on a satellite capable TiVo DVR.
In addition to DirecTV news, Rogers also spoke about TiVo’s partnership with Best Buy. According to Rogers, TiVo has been working with BestBuy to incorporate BestBuy’s digital content into TiVo’s DVR package (Napster or an Insignia TiVo DVR?).
Along with BestBuy & DirecTV, TiVo also announced that they’ve formed a partnership with Google. Now before you get all excited, you should note that this partnership simply means that Google plans to leverage TiVo’s user data within their TV advertising program.
On the international front, TiVo also announced that they will soon be available to Virgin television subscribers in the UK. This is obviously big news considering the fact that Virgin has nearly 4 million subscribers in the UK!
Last but not least, Rogers also mentioned that TiVo has been spending research and development dollars to improve the TiVo experience. Specifically, Rogers said that TiVo has been working on a keyboard remote! This isn’t the first time that TiVo has mentioned a keyboard remote. I know there are a lot of people out there who have requested this feature so hopefully we’ll see something soon (CES?).
On top of these discounts, weaKnees has also announced that they are now offering a 1 TB TiVo HD for $449 (down from $549). According to weaKnees, a 1 TB DVR will allow you to record approximately 145 hours of HD content (1350 hrs. SD)! Hot of the heels of their recently released Windows update, TiVo has gone ahead and delivered on their promise of a new version of TiVo Desktop for the Mac (version 1.95). According to its release notes, this update brings with it the ability to run TiVo Desktop within Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
Even though there weren’t many surprises with this release it’s great to see TiVo continue to support Mac OS X (even if it was a couple of months late). If you’re looking for additional Mac software to improve your TiVo experience look no further than this post. |
